It took them seven years to come up with an excuse to not make this movie that sounded somewhat believable. Don't fall for it. Yuri on ice was a massive original IP with a level of international fame and celebrity interest that's rarely seen in anime. It was profitable.
This show had it's own section in Hot Topic at one point, with themed Ramen bowls, water bottles, and backpacks. That does not happen for animes unless it's Demon Slayer or My Hero Academia level huge. You will never, in a million years, convince me it wasn't profitable.
