It is widely maintained that trade #unions in "actually existing #socialism" were merely state-run apparatuses to control the workforce. Here, former DDR planning official Uwe Trostel explains the role unions played in East German workplaces. Full video: youtube.com/watch?v=Ak7dnx…

Join us on Sunday (20.10.) in #Berlin for a discussion on socialist development in #Mongolia. We will be exploring, among other things, the concept of "non-capitalist development" and how Mongolia was considered a role model for the Global South. Info: ifddr.org/veranstaltung-…

In 1975, scholars and cadres from seven socialist states convened in Berlin for a conference on Mongolia’s path from feudalism to socialism and how this historical experience could inform non-capitalist development strategies throughout Africa and Asia. [A short thread: 🧵]

Despite suffering a far higher degree of war destruction & being cut off from raw materials, East Germany was able to rapidly re-industrialize after 1945, constructing a mixed economy based on worker & peasant power. Our new article examines this period: ifddr.org/en/from-recons…

In this new article, we examine the economic problems of the "transitional period" in East Germany (1945–1949). Struggling against post-war destruction and separatist policies of the West, workers in the East began rebuilding & taking control of industry: ifddr.org/en/from-recons…

Women's employment in socialist #DDR: Women accounted for more than 50% of judges; 35% of mayors; and 40% of parliament. Despite not reaching full parity in management positions, by 1986, there were more women in management in the DDR (34%) than there are in Germany today (29%).

The land reform (1945-46) & cooperative movement (1952-1960) were arguably the most revolutionary upheavals in East German history. To mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the #GDR, here is a preview of our upcoming study on socialist agriculture: ifddr.org/en/the-most-re…
