1/6 I've somehow made it 1 year through my pre-doc position without getting fired. To celebrate, I'll share a little write-up I made for those just starting. Recent grads and #EconTwitter might find it helpful. This is based on my specific experience. drive.google.com/open?id=16eUvt…

i'm on the job market with a paper about political sorting in the labor market! it's perhaps harder to choose your coworkers than your friends or who you follow on twitter -- could the workplace be less segregated than other places where democrats and republicans tend not to mix?

Does anyone have a good review or paper that compares the impacts of different interventions on college student outcomes? I am trying to compare the effect size of an intervention I'm studying to other interventions on college student GPA.

Watters: I was not invited to my mother's house for Thanksgiving. Apparently there wasn't enough room. She said it was a scheduling situation, and then invited me to come over on Black Friday. I told her no thanks, I'll be at Best Buy

Borjas (1987):

In some societies, it's safe to be an average person. Europe is the best example of this. If you have no personality, ambition, or interests, you will find yourself relatively healthy, cultured, and happy, more or less by default. Your society, both at the government and family…

I think the takeaway is that people don't naturally think in terms of counterfactuals, only pre-post comparisons.

Economists are going to have to reckon with the fact that the public would have preferred a slower recovery with much higher unemployment, as long as prices had been stable.

If you can't get academics showing confidence intervals instead of p-values, there is no way in hell the average person wants to see anything but a point estimate.

My wish for the next election is that poll trackers look like the one on the right 👉 not the left This was yet another election where the polling showed it could easily go either way, but most of the charts just showed two nice clean lines, one leading and one trailing. Bad!
