The “Unknown” dead of Gettysburg National Cemetery, along with a record of their earthly effects found at the time of reinterment. This hallowed ground was dedicated on November 19, 1863 to the memory of those US soldiers who gave the “last full measure of devotion.”

One of the most famous speeches in American history, #OTD in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Echoing the nation's founding principles and calling for a "new birth of freedom," the 272 words of the speech are carved inside the Lincoln Memorial.

On this day in 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivers his famous Gettysburg Address. The president's critics initially dismiss the 90-second speech as "ludicrous" and "silly." It will later be held up as the most brilliant piece of oratory in U.S. history.

The WASP weren't fighter pilots, they ferried new and old aircraft to and from factories and airbases, but it would still be amazing to find your air hostess on a journey had previously flown military aircraft in World War II.

Thank you. You're right. They were flying fighter planes, medium bombers and heavy bombers. The ladies ferrying P-51s across the Atlantic were making something like 10-hour journeys, right? Solo. No restroom. I look for a gas station every 2 to 4 hours on a road trip.

HOW TRUE!

#RestInPower #RestInPeace #Women #pilots: It's horrifying to think we were oblivious to being served by flight attendants who we had no idea were actually fighter pilots! Warner Robins Museum of Aviation has some displays on WASPs, etc. Maybe other air museums do to?

The Luminaria at Gettysburg National Cemetery is one of the solemn highlights of Remembrance Weekend. A candle is placed at each grave of 3,500 Union soldiers who gave their lives here in 1863.
