Whole Tree Craft
@WholeTreeCraftBased in Lancashire UK, I volunteer in woodland management, have a keen interest in green woodworking, chair making, coppice crafts and woodland habitats.
Hi-my first post introducing my interest in green woodworking and chair making. This chair is made from ash with a danish cord woven seat, all of the parts being riven from green ash, shaped on a shave horse with draw knife, spoke shave and scraper. The rear legs are steam bent.
Latest project just completed and first coat of oil made it really pop. Knife block in oak, ash and spalted beech. Ash is from locally felled trees (due to die back) and windfall Beech from a local estate, carefully rip sawing to find the best spalting was a treat.
Really beautiful late 15th/early 16th century pews in the Church of St. Bartholomew, Great Gransden, Cambridgeshire 😍
The Berkshire Bodgers have made 2 hand crafted memorial bench seats to celebrate the life and achievements of their late group founder Bill Acworth.

Nice find at the car boot, Stanley No 742 breast drill, USA made, wonder how she ended up in Lancashire ? I've a few other braces but this is a new fangled two speed affair - how fancy. I'll post some pics once she's cleaned and and doing a job for me. #handtool #woodworking

Warmer weather is on the way, and wood is on the move! Why does wood move? Because of water! Wood movement is caused by a nearly unavoidable, natural tendency of moisture to enter and exit wood cells from the surrounding environment. Learn more here bit.ly/455dJMj
Good log -v- Bad log, looking for straight grain for chair parts, you dont want the abomination on the right 🔥🌳 thats going for firewood! This is green ash wood, felled a month or two before splitting, you never know what you’re going to find, great fun.
Recent car boot find, rare to have the original box on a Stanley no 4, I think perhaps bought in UK in 1970’s. I’ve cleaned it up and oiled it but not sharpened it yet. Very nostalgic. #woodworking #crafts
One for the #handtool woodworkers, here are some of the tools I used at a recent green woodworking demonstration, yep including a pack of extra strong mints apparently 😂 I love the old spoke shaves.
We'll be at Milly's Smiles Spring Fair on Saturday, the 18th of May. Then, on Monday, the 27th of May, we'll be at the Great Harwood Agricultural Show, which will be held at the Great Harwood Showground. We'll be providing lots of free, fun, and creative craft activities!
When you need your chair parts dry quickly, bang them in the oven on gas mark 1 (if that means 60 c !?), bit of a gamble but needs must.
Dry run setting up the pole lathe under the event shelter ready for Great Harwood Show 27th May 2024. Come along to see how it is used for traditional chair making.
