“The fantasy of purely technological solutions is bound up with the desire to eliminate political and social responsibility for human vulnerability.” - excellent letter in the @LRB

Following on from this, it seems a lot of people don’t know unfortunately (which I kinda expected!) Symbol canes are intended to let people know the person has low vision, but it isn’t used for navigation purposes like longer canes 😊 V useful infographic below from @RNIB

Trying to get a bit stricter with myself to use my symbol cane when I’m out and it’s busy! Just trynna get a general feel, if you saw someone holding a short white cane, in front of them + above the ground, would you know what it means and why it’s different to a long cane?

Moments like this are why it's vital to educate everyone, especially those with platforms like @bbcquestiontime, that sight is a spectrum. People with the same eye condition can have different experiences. For some, wearing eye shields might be due to sensitivity to light.

Fiona Bruce should make a public apology for mocking a VI/blind lady for wearing sunglasses in the studio for @bbcquestiontime @BBCOne @RNIB_campaigns @RNIB As someone who is registered blind with extreme light sensitivity I found it offensive!

Hélène Cixous: “I owe some of the most fantastical hallucinatory experiences of my childhood to my extreme nearsightedness: vanishing streets, substitutions, metaphorization and metonymization of the world and of people.” (in an interview collected in Rootprints, tr. Prenowitz)

Happy #RareDiseaseDay! 😎 Having the rare visual impairment #Aniridia hasn't stopped me living a happy, fulfilled, successful life. In fact, I'm actually a support worker for a good friend who has even more severe sight loss than me. We make a great team! welleyenever.com/2024/02/16/the…

I spoke with @aisling_murph_ about vision loss on television, writing for @CTV’s Sight Unseen, and getting the details right. Appreciate the @TorontoStar for taking the time and @WGCtweet for highlighting the article.

WGC member @presgang talks about writing on SIGHT UNSEEN: “...We tried to talk to the lived experience of what vision loss is actually like, rather than just being another procedural show with some sort of hook..." Article also features member DJ Demers! thestar.com/entertainment/…
