Happy Pride! Spending it cleaning up after our daughter's birthday party... and considering how to usefully channel anger about what we intend to explain tomorrow: she has fewer rights now than she did Thursday. Living in Washington is a panacea, not a solution.
So Clarence Thomas wants to invalidate my marriage protected by Obergefell but not invalidate his marriage protected by Loving. Got it.
Today is Juneteenth. In recognition of its significance, we are dimming the lights of our Public Market Center Clock & Sign to show only BLM. #PikePlaceMarket was created and built to serve everyone in our community. #BlackLivesMatter
I'm not going to complain about the cool summer we're having, but I'm loving our first gorgeous summer day.
This is an insane read.
“My husband swears he saw Ms. Lewis at Ace yesterday afternoon!” one woman wrote. “He saw the Maryland plates and the driver looked just like her.” White Parents Rallied to Chase a Black Educator Out of Town. Then, They Followed Her to the Next One. propublica.org/article/georgi…
There are a bunch of good discussions going around now about sentience means, but another piece sticking with me is the engineer believing this. I'm not sure if that's why @emilymbender characterizes this piece as sad but that's what does it for me. That sounds lonely.
This story (by @nitashatiku) is really sad, and I think an important window into the risks of designing systems to seem like humans, which are exacerbated by #AIhype: washingtonpost.com/technology/202…

It's not like I have the power of choice, but if I did I'd take this over heat dome any day. My garden is loving this.
🌧Wet, wet, wet! 🌧 Yesterday was the 6th-wettest June day on record in Seattle, with 1.10” of rain. #Juneuary
By this logic there is no reason to fix and patch security vulnerabilities because of course you have a firewall.
Rep. Andy Biggs: "You say, well, we don't want to talk about doors. What do we do? We hide behind doors -- because they work. You can harden schools and make them work."
Subtext="you city folk don't understand our situation", right? In Seattle we put the chickens away at night to protect them from predators (coyotes too). Maybe he could try that.
"An AR-15 is a gun of choice for killing raccoons before they get to our chickens." — Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO)
I'm very tired of watching the former tenants spend their last weeks in residency breaking windows, smearing excrement into the carpet, and setting bonfires in the living room. The new year won't fix the damage. Just looking for a chance to stabilize the situation.
Scanner: "Small bear cub" reported seen running at 35th SW & SW Trenton.
While a very young conference newbie I accidentally sat at the speakers' table at a Cato Institute conference. I thus had lunch with Joseph Nye and Richard Rosencrance. Rosencrance was super nice and engaging. Nye was probably hoping for a quiet meal.

Taking a breath and noticing the very beautiful part of the world we live in.
As the mother of a child, I endorse this message. More attention can be counterproductive.

1. Got an awesome new data-centric role in Azure Compute. 2. Co-trained our new giant puppy. 3. Learned how to trim my own hair pretty well.

This is crazy. Imagine hearing someone unwittingly confess to you the details of how they tried to murder you.
In August, @navalny was poisoned by an FSB team with Novichok. Last week, @navalny spoke to one of the FSB officers involved in the operation... for 48 minutes. Full transcript (in Russian + English), analysis, and everything else you need to know: bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
