“Providers didn’t all miss the day in medical school when students were taught how not to be cruel to fat people. Medical fatphobia is medicine’s status quo.” 🧵🔧 Welcome to Pipe Wrench no. 6: The Fat Issue. It’s a big one, as is only fitting.

Here we go. 11 rising Black men headed to Washington D.C. to represent Portland, OR. We stand on the shoulders of giants who paved the way for us to be here today. Thank you for all the support from so many to make this trip possible. Onward! ✊🏽👑

We cannot ignore the fact that if Brittney Griner wasn’t a Black woman, it would be plastered across the news that she is being held as a political prisoner in Russia. Free Brittney Griner.

If you think the concept of abolishing police & prisons today is too radical to be entertained, you would not have been an abolitionist working to end slavery which was an equally radical notion & carried criminal penalties for those who disrupted the slave economy.

Those of us who are serious about reducing crime know to attack it at the root and address poverty. Increasing the fines, harassment, and surveillance of poor people only shows you’re serious about profiting off of poverty.

Resistance to defunding the police is founded on the false assumption that police are necessary for public safety. Police are reactive, have low rates of solving serious crimes, shouldn't be a response to public health issues, and reinforce race and class inequalities by design.
