Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved transit, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better. The traffic got BETTER.

The problem of too many cars isn’t just about the tailpipe. And altho EVs seemingly address that issue (or “move” it, depending on the electricity source), their increased weight, and the potential increase in size & distance driven (due to #JevonsParadox) make EVs “complicated.”

Bicycles need much less scarce urban space than cars. That's why motorists should support more people #cycling. 10% of drivers switching from cars to motorcycles reduced congestion by 40%. Just imagine the numbers if 10% switches to e-)bikes! ⚡️🚴💪🌱webbikeworld.com/motorcycles-ig…

Pedestrian islands can reduce car vs. pedestrian crashes by 32%. Believe it or not, these projects get rejected b/c they're put up for vote and enough people don't like the idea that they might have to slow down or give way while driving. safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ped_bike/step/…

Helsinki planners have modelled what happens when pedestrians are prioritised, rather than forced to wait ages to cross. They found that a 5% improvement in the walking environment leads to a 2.3% increase in public transport use and €8.5 million increase in fares. So, how? 🧵
