Let's be clear. A vote for the bill at second reading is a vote in favour of its principles. It's not a vote to “continuing the discussion”.

Absolutely devastating critique of the judicial safeguard by the former President of the Family Division of the High Court As he puts it, it just doesn't work to detect external pressure

Dr Cajetan Skowronski @TradSkowronski talks to @LeeAlanHall about assisted suicide & euthanasia. He warns doctors can't detect coercion, the slippery slope to assisted death for non-terminally ill is inevitable, & selfless elders will be pressured to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Seems appropriate that Dignity in Dying appear to have hanged David Lloyd George as part of their campaign to bring back judicial death

Important info here on why the Assisted Suicide Bill needs to stop at Second Reading. Scrutiny after that will be minimal; unlike normal Bills with proper later stages this will go through largely unamended. To vote Aye at 2R is to vote for the Bill as it stands to become law.

Where to start... Perspective is as former No 10 Director of Legislative Affairs and seeing how the PMB process really worked. Govt uses PMB process for 'handouts' - issues that are typically NOT controversial because it knows they won't get much scrutiny. Departments have to…

Dignity in Dying say assisted suicide can “guarantee a safe and peaceful death.” The reality is rather different. Me at @UnHerd today: unherd.com/2024/11/the-pa…

"You aren't against rubber stamps portrayed as safeguards against unjust killing because you think it is a hollow deception. You're against rubber stamps coz you're against killing." Actually you can be against killing AND against hollow rubber stamps dressed up as "safeguards".

You aren’t against the safeguards because you think they are inadequate. Or because someone did or didn’t fluff an interview. You are against them because you wouldn’t favour them in any circumstances.

As predicted, there are no safeguards for Mabel in this Bill. Indeed doctors are permitted to raise the option of Assisted Suicide completely uninvited

Some time in 2025 after the Assisted Dying vote: Mabel is too frail to return home from hospital, but has no acute medical problem after her UTI was treated for 3 days. She has been sitting in a hospital bed for 5 weeks waiting for a care home placement. She feels awful about…

I am a @reformparty_uk member, a medical doctor and a bioethicist I cannot express how disappointed and ashamed I am that their Deputy Leader @TiceRichard supports this horrendous euthanasia bill Thousands of vulnerable people will be killed by this bill. Appalling.

Reform support Starmer’s euthanasia plan. Is there any party that doesn’t want to hand these powers to the same ‘expert’ class who ran the Covid response? Anyone who’s researched Canada knows how horrific this gets. This leaves me with no one to vote for.

Doctors are not psychics. We cannot magically detect if a patient has been coerced or pressured into a decision. There are no safeguards in the Assited Dying Bill. Just platitudes and bureaucracy.

I asked 4 times how a doctor would know whether or not someone had been pressured into assisted dying 👇

Victoria Derbyshire: “How would anyone know if someone had been coerced [into assisted dying]?” Christine Jardine MP: *incoherent rambling*. The main safeguard for the assisted dying bill brought by Kim Leadbeater MP is undefinable so is unenforeceable. It must fail.

It turns out @TiceRichard is either less socially conservative than @HackneyAbbott, or incredibly naive as an MP Abbott & Streeting understand that there are no meaningful safeguards in this bill, and they rightly do not trust the broken NHS to be ending the lives of vulnerable.

'This bill has the strongest safeguards that have ever been discussed, possibly the strongest in the world.' Deputy leader of Reform UK, Richards Tice, on the first draft of the assisted dying legislation. 📺 Freeview 236, Sky 512, Virgin 604

Interesting and frightening that it is legal for a doctor to suggest lethal medications to a patient who hasn't mentioned it! And illegal for a doctor to refuse to refer someone for Assisted dying if they request it. No true conscientious objection!
