you're basically right the first time, as far as the underlying reason goes - with hardware acceleration turned on, the video stream uses HDCP to "prevent copyright infringement". they reluctant permit downgrading so as to avoid losing market share on old hardware, i would guess
Okay, I *finally* discovered the solution to this - I had to turn off hardware acceleration in the Chrome settings. It wasn't Netflix/Prime's fault so I withdraw my sarcastic slow-clap in this matter (though not with regards to all the other rubbish they still get up to).
Sarcastic slow-clap to @netflix and @primevideouk for blocking the ability to take screenshots, another anti-piracy measure which actually pushes people towards piracy.
