Very proud of this paper! Take-home: mobility is essential for men living with #HIV in #Malawi & most travel is for income generation. But mobility and HIV care conflict in many ways, and men living with HIV suffer the consequences.
"More than three-quarters of participants described travelling for income generation, usually essential for basic survival" Read this mixed-methods study from #Malawi to find out how mobility impacts these men's ART retention: bit.ly/3zdPfkK #HIVcare
Exciting news: I’m now officially an Assistant Professor in the Div of Infectious Diseases at @dgsomucla! With the support of a K01 award from @NIMHgov, I’ll be continuing my research on mobility and HIV treatment in Malawi (while based in Nairobi). I’m thrilled!
Our latest results: Men in #Malawi who had negative experiences at a health facility were less likely to later test for #HIV. Improving overall health services is critical for reaching priority targets like HIV testing. bit.ly/3RrnPl2 @AIDSandBehavior @dgsomucla
Join our team! Dr Kate Dovel is looking for a #postdoc with exp in geospatial analysis and #HIV prevention research to join our group @PartnersinHope1 Malawi. Unfortunately, position is limited to US citizens-- but if that excludes you, please reach out so we can discuss!
Taking a break from my X break to share this brilliant piece. Love to see more proof that #migration is good for receiving communities. Unfortunately I don't think Congress got the memo in the year since this was published.
Increased immigration into the US led to more nursing home workers and better outcomes for nursing home residents, from @DavidCGrabowski Jonathan Gruber, and @McGarryBE nber.org/papers/w30960
Love to live in a place that values free movement across borders: businessdailyafrica.com/bd/economy/ken…
In addition to our findings in Malawi, we also wrote this commentary on overarching issues of #mobility and #HIV. Consider it a lit review shortcut :) Huge thanks to my co-authors (none of whom are on Twitter!) for the months of work that went into these two pieces 🙏
"Mobility in #SubSaharan #Africa is closely linked to #income generation, though #caregiving, #climatechange and #violence also contribute to the need to move." Read the full commentary by Thorp et al. to learn more: bit.ly/3TRei6s
Congrats to @Kate_Coursey on a great paper in @AIDSandBehavior! She outlines key barriers to men's ART initiation & retention in #Malawi - including unexpected travel. Check it out: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36401144/ @PIHOPE2018

If you ever feel like it's hard to communicate an important issue to the public, remember that at least you're not @WilliamsRuto who has to explain to #Kenyans why the Hustler President has to increase the price of petrol 55Ksh on his first day in office😳
