When I lived in Russia the ruble hovered around 30 to the dollar for years and years. It still blows my mind that it has lost more than half its value since the annexation of Crimea. Imagine trading half your people’s savings for a small piece of another country.

Maryam Mirzakhani was the first Iranian and the first (and only) woman to win the Fields Medal in 2014. She was born in 1977, studied Mathematics at Sharif University in Iran, and did her PhD at Harvard. She died of breast cancer in 2017. RIP
