Esther was a cornerstone of the international community in Freiburg. She was one of the people who inspired this podcast, & now she's on the show! She speaks about teaching criminal law in Tübingen and her decision to move back to the US. theexpatcast.com/everything-ali…

Fantastic playlist of podcasts delving into the topic of HOME. Thanks for including my episode "Finding and Defining Home" with Keltie, @podcastbrunch :D

Every year, @TheExpatCast and I raise money for charity. This year, donations go towards providing crisis support for Ukrainian children and youths. We're almost at our goal! Donate now! betterplace.org/de/fundraising…

In Germany we don’t say „Da hast du recht, diese Struktur ist veraltet und nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Das müssen wir dringend reformieren.“ We say „das ist historisch gewachsen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯“ and I think thats fucking horrible.

In Germany a nine year old girl was speaking Turkish to her friend during recess. A teacher over heard her and demanded she speak German- they punished her by forcing her to write a paper on “why we speak German in school”. Then her parents sued the school and won. ❤️

Two of my favorite things in one video: American public libraries and water bottles. US public libraries just make me so dang happy (especially when they are being funded and not being attacked and encouraged by extremists to ban books, ahem, PS go vote) youtube.com/watch?v=5Keagt…

Good afternoon to the old lady who saw teens wearing Bremen gear in Freiburg today and stopped, glared, and yelled at them, "You're REALLY wearing GREEN today in this city! What a JOKE!" #scfreiburg

The Wiwili Bridge connects the Stühlinger district with the Old Town, bridging the tracks of #Freiburg's nearby main railway station. From the old town, the bridge leads to the churchyard of the Sacred Heart Church (pic). The bridge houses two memorials. #WeAreGermany

Another word which I find a lot of fun is "ankommen". Have you noticed Germans can arrive physically somewhere and yet require further time to "ankommen"? The spirit lags behind the body a bit... English spirit is unable to separate in this subtle way. We are monists.

I have found it. The rarest German sign.

Meanwhile German football/soccer commentators are 90% them sitting in silence and then occasionally mumbling something in a very even tone. 😂

Love trams. Love even more that the trams in my town are called VAG. Love VAG.

The magic of trams & streetcars: (and why they're the best form of public transport in cities)

This week I talk to @dcwarrington of the podcast @about_abroad, a total remote work nerd, and reveal that I am a digital nomad skeptic. We get into the pros and cons, the perks and consequences, of this new work structure that's here to stay. theexpatcast.com/remote-work/

This convo feels like when you compliment someone on their cool coat and end up falling into conversation and find that they're just as cool, if not cooler, than their coat. ...OK that is a very North America example. Germans don't talk to strangers. 😅 theexpatcast.com/identity-burps…

Twitter is just a Pawnee town hall

Tomorrow will be a good morning. In fact, a great morning. Because a new episode of The Expat Cast will be waiting for you in your podcast feed! We're back for season 7, baby!

I tweeted this 2.5 years ago and I gotta say, my desire to siezen people has dropped dramatically the longer the pandemic has gone on.

Sobutlike are we still going to have to siezt everyone when this is all over orrrrrrr

Heck yes, shout out to my hometown library in the US for providing many hours of my listening in Germany!

to keep up w/ audible, spotify is now selling audiobooks. do NOT buy from either of these brands. there's an app called Libby which is 100% FREE that has thousands of old & brand new audiobooks and all you need is your library card number!
