Teaching Big Men for 4 decades.

When It Come to Practice: I tried to remember the old saying, “As you practice, so shall you play.” My practices required attention to detail, great effort, and commitment. To build a successful program takes a little more than the “normal."

Teaching the Fundamentals in Basketball is an important part of developing successful teams and players.

A well organized Practice Plan is important at any time of the season, but a Master Outline can keep you focused & away from wasting too much time in any one area. Here was my Guide to making a Daily Practice Schedule:

Pre Season Practice Scheduling is something I always carefully prepared. Here is a common example of how I set up our teaching & training for the first month of pre season before an opening game. Keeping it simple, reviewing always in short segments.

For explanations on attacking various Presses, including the Run & Jump, get a copy of my guide, “Don’t Press Your Luck.” 18 drills diagramed & explained, point guard development techniques, & tips on handling every pressure alignment you can imagine. coachhack-go.sellfy.store/p/dont-press-y…

In my coaching experience, there are 5 important aspects that need to be covered in every practice. They don't always need a lot of time, just emphasis. 1. Half Court Defense 2. Half Court Offense 3. Offensive & Defensive Transition 4. Handling Full Court Pressure 5. Rebounding

A key to a good fast break attack is not only good defense, but great rebounding. Defensive rebounding limiting to “one & done” by opponents and offensive rebounding getting 2nd & 3rd chances on put backs. Coaches need rebounding attention or drills each practice.

Getting your team to "play hard & practice hard" with smart physical & mental conditioning is covered in chapter 18 of my book, "You Can Run With Anyone." Line Drills are not the way to get great effort. If you have the book, check out pages 181-189. coachbattenberg.com/books.htm

Always great to visit with long time coaching friend Coach Orlich & his program. Buchanan has a great culture, hard working players, a super coaching staff, & what I really like best, a nice 6’8” post & other Bigs to go with him. Best of luck to the Bears this season.

Special thank you to @TerryBattenberg and mentor and coaching legend for coming down and visiting the Buchanan Basketball Program Appreciate all your coaching observations and talking to the team and working with our post men.
