I share this because I believe the role of manager needs to adopt this philosophy. Especially in this new world of rapid job change. Investing in people regardless of where they go. Celebrating in their success. Sudhakar has & it’s a trait I’d like to see spread.
I’m now in a position where product leaders report to me, and this conversation repeats itself in my brain on each new direct report sent my way. It drives me to not be a people manager, but to be a coach, a support system, to help this person get to where they want to go.
It is one of those conversations I’ll never forget. Here I was taking a senior position and my boss is basically saying, I’ll invest in you regardless of what happens next. True to his word, he has continued to mentor and support me well after he & I left Citrix.
My friend @Sudhakar_Rama once said to me that he invests in people not jobs. He said this as he took me on as his CTO, a job I thought I’d never leave. He said jobs change, people move on, but his promise to me was to invest in me, regardless of where my career took me.
