CT increases slightly buried in yesterday's budget but will impact households to varying degrees depending on local authority area. Excellent summary from my colleague @Alex__Clegg
The rise in the cap on #counciltax increases from 3% to 5% in today’s #autumnstatement exacerbates the postcode lottery created by council tax and council tax support. CT increases will hit residents in areas with higher CT liability and less generous CTS schemes hardest 🧵
Why is this so crucial? Excellent summary from my colleague @jackrowh at @policy_practice Benefits claimants aren't just facing a loss in income in 2023; they've already lost out to inflation for the past 8 years. Uprating by 10% is the absolute minimum needed now.
Uprating in line with this year’s inflation is an imperfect solution to years of benefits freezes, but it is far better than uprating in line with wages. That would shift huge numbers into poverty - for example childcare cost inflation has been 10+% for consecutive years.
Both interesting and sobering working on this analysis for @ObserverUK Hopeful that we'll see the government honour its previous commitment to uprate in line with inflation today; this is crucial for low income families.
Your energy bills are *NOT* capped at £2,500 from this evening. @policy_practice finds that 👉 Large households will pay £3,450; 👉 Energy inefficient properties could cost large families up to £8,000 a year 👉 Prepayment customers face a poverty premium of 2%
I loved this campaign last year! It's been really heartwarming to see the impact the advice sector and @policy_practice are having.
However, these measures do not benefit households out of work. Two-thirds of everyone on UC It doesn't make up for ongoing cuts to social security, with growing (and avoidable) gaps in housing support and rent, or larger families affected by the benefit cap or two child limit.
Alongside the budget, how does cutting the #UniversalCredit taper compare to other measures? The analysis below by @policy_practice for @jrf_uk in 2014 still stands!
This is incorrect. To make up for losing the £20/week uplift, a single parent working 25 hours/week at NMW will have to work an additional 9 hours/week. Not two. UC claimants face a marginal tax rate of ~75% (from a 63% UC Taper, income tax and NI). It's time to #CancelTheCut
"£20 a week is about two hours extra work every week, we will be seeing what we can do help people perhaps secure those extra hours” On #BBCBreakfast Work and Pension Secretary Thérèse Coffey says the increase to universal credit was always temporary. bbc.in/3k2swRY
