Bhagwan Vishnu is about to wake up from Yog Nidra, a state of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness on the 12th of November. This is called Dev Uthani Ekadashi. 12th and 13th is Tulsi Vivah, beginning of the marriage season, symbolising the meeting of bhakt with Bhagwan.
Chat puja, a puja, dedicated to the Surya Dev started on 5th of November and will conclude on the 8th of November. It is a good idea to pray to Surya Dev for these four days by offering him water with sandalwood and rice. Chant the Gayatri mantra, Aditya Hridayam, Surya Gayatri.
On Bhai Dooj, Yama, the god of death, visited his sister, Yami, on this day. Pleased by her devotion, Yama granted her the boon that all brothers visiting their sisters on Bhai Dooj would be blessed with a long life and prosperity.
Today is Dhanteras a day when we should worship Yama Dev for protection from untimely death. Light a lamp of mustard oil in the evening and pray to Yama Dev and keep it in the south direction outside the house.

There is merit attached to lighting lamps to the Divine in the current month of Kartik as per our ancient scriptures. Agni Puran says donating a lamp in a temple or a Brahmin’s home earns merit. Padma Purana says that Lakshmi Ji is pleased when lamps are donated to temples.
