My second novel, The Catchers, is out today. A dark tale for dark times that just happens to be set in 1920s America. Contains moonshine, mountain music, & human oddities. Step right up 🪕saltpublishing.com/products/the-c…
This review of The Catchers by the one & only Sandra Newman makes me wonder if I've ever had a better review for anything, like ever, in my life. Dumbstruck, disorientated, completely undone theguardian.com/books/2024/oct…
What a poem; what an astonishing poet. RIP John Burnside - it was an honour to know you.
Changing lives one story at a time: @GrimmAndCo - a remarkable, awe inspiring @ace_national #NPO in #Rotherham. A privilege to look round their magical new home today. Their excellent work now leads the way, influencing other literacy organisations around the world #LetsCreate
📚 "Reading with a child sets off fireworks in their brains" 🎆 @BookTrust's Chief Executive, Diana Gerald MBE, took a moment to tell us about what books and stories mean to them, and why they are so important for our children’s future 👇 buff.ly/49YAtyD #LetsCreate
Good question to encounter on a day when I've spent quite a long time pondering the fact that I've been thinking about 'Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening' on and off for nigh-on 30 years(!), and yet more I think about it, the stranger, wilder, and less explicable it becomes.
Which poems calm you? (Please include links if online.)
"Reading print improves comprehension more than looking at digital text, say researchers." True! And I think that's one reason why kids still LOVE physical books. They can get totally absorbed in the world of a book, with no distractions, unlike a screen! theguardian.com/books/2023/dec…
Time to revisit this masterpiece of suspense and cheer. One of the gretest ever Christmas stories.
The most stressed out I've ever been about Christmas was when I was 16 and I got my first ever job, working at M&S in Dundrum. As soon as I started I kept hearing these myths about the Christmas Eve Waste Sale, where all the food that wasn't sold on the 24th was marked down 90%.

Proud of @XanBrooks all the time; cranking that up a notch today
Cover reveal for my second novel, THE CATCHERS, which contains floodwater & music & mountains & crooks. A road (& boat) trip adventure through 1920s America. Out next year with the excellent @saltpublishing
“You're looking for one detail that lights up the page: one line to perturb or challenge the reader, make him feel acknowledged, yet estranged.” “Acknowledged, yet estranged”! Put that above every writer’s desk. Me on Mantel’s “final book” (huh! I bet): theguardian.com/books/2023/oct…
Great to attend the Magic Swindon event at @create_studios and hear about the amazing work being done in the creative and arts sectors in the town. Huge thanks to @ace_southwest for their support and input.
They've only gone and done it again. WELL DONE @FitzcarraldoEds (and congratulations, Jon Fosse)
🎉 WOW 🎉 We are utterly thrilled to discover that Jon Fosse has won the @NobelPrize in Literature! 🎉
Should just be called the Fitzcarraldo Prize for Literature at this stage. Phenomenal.
Too sad and sickened to post anything more about yesterday, but the only hopeful response, it seems to me this morning, is to plant a forest in the sycamore's memory. I've no doubt the @WoodlandTrust will be thinking about this already. Some good has to come out of this.

This is beyond upsetting.
🌳The Sycamore Gap Tree won England's #TreeOfTheYear contest in 2016. 💔How horrible to see it has been felled.
Fantastic to be at the launch of @bbccslfest tonight - live on @BBCFrontRow All poetry, all the time… #ACEsupported @ace_national
1000 TIMES YES. Fire & Hemlock fully blew my mind as a kid. Also the first time I consciously paid attention to language in a book: still remember the descrip of Polly’s feet on frosty grass making “wheezing munches, like someone chewing an ice cube”. DWJ: storyteller nonpareil
