This is what is sounds like in my head when someone asks me to put multiple books and historiographies “in conversation with each other.”
I’m receiving word that the MSU Denver deans are clearing their schedules, as they are likely to be announced as the Democratic VP candidate on Tuesday.
Teachers clinging desperately to the last remnants of summer, fingernails bleeding
Finished 27th in 36:41:22 for 13th consecutive Badwater 135. Had some leftover energy. Turned around at the finish at the portal and ran back to the start line - 270 miles total. Probably once in a lifetime. 📸 Matthew Watts (Final climb to the Portal)
Last year's summer school Marwan Kilani, Benjamin Suchard, Ahmad Sosal, Maarten Mous and I taught a course on 'reconstructing afro-asiatic'. I think we all came out of that positively: there's something there and it's promising. But also depressing: most work on it is a mess.
New blog post: ELP has released a statement on our use (or non-use) of AI tools. endangeredlanguages.com/blog We want to clarify how we use (or don't use) #AI tools at ELP: (1/4)
So fascinated by how this says that Vance “got famous because rich centrists liked [some things about him]”, and there is a litany of comments saying some variation of “no, he got famous because billionaires liked him.” Like what do you think the OP says?

And there has been “there never was feudalism discourse” this week. Be humble and bow before your lord, serf!
Here’s a freebie: as a job seeker, you are not in a position to dictate a bloody thing to your search committee. It’s squarely and utterly a buyer’s market. Humility and gratitude go much farther than self-entitlement.
Broke: who will clean the sewers in your communist utopia? Woke: who will tend the bananas in your communist utopia?
Anyone happen to know what came of M. Lionel Bender's planned monograph on the Aroid languages (announced in his 1994 paper "Aroid Lexicon")? Folded into his later general Omotic books? Exists in any sort of manuscript form? Aborted entirely?
I’m hearing that all the UVA students arrested yesterday have been barred from coming on campus. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some of them live on campus, so they’re now homeless, having to stay with off campus friends. They cannot easily access their possessions on campus obviously.
Some men (and women?) would rather brutalize and gas their students and faculty than disclose and divest investments that fund ethnic cleansing/genocide.

Busloads of riot cops in Poe Alley. Riot line and pepper ball guns. Pepper spraying students. Swat trucks approaching on 29. State violence unleashed on peaceful protestors @UVA chanting “we must love each other and protect one another”. Where is Pres Ryan and Prov Baucom? #UVA
