I’m trying to source a snow machine. Twitter used to do kind things and people would ‘like’ and ‘repost’ pleas like this. Is that still a thing? Please repost if you can! 😊

Encouraging reading for pleasure (volitional/independent reading) has nothing to do with 'forcing' or 'requiring' children to love 'literature'. All reading, of whatever kind, counts, if it's switching children & young people on to reading by choice & reading more.

Seeing some comment suggesting that teaching children how to read is ‘more important’ than reading for pleasure/volitional reading. The point is they’re intrinsically linked. Lots of evidence on this & on wider impact on academic achievement. Those who read lots benefit hugely!

Reading enjoyment among children and young people has plummeted to its lowest level in almost two decades. Just 1 in 3 now say they enjoy reading in their free time and even fewer are reading daily. The futures of a generation are at risk - we need urgent action now.⬇️

If you (or any school teacher reading this) would like us to create resources for a particular text or texts – and by ‘resources’ I mean a set of mini-lectures by an academic and/or the actual author of the text – *please* let us know and we’ll do our best to build it for you.

🌟Students need a sentence structure to show their understanding that big ideas are connected to little moments.🌟🧵 I talk a lot about micro and macro. Everything we read and write moves between big & small; small & big. Being able to access the big idea is important. 1/10

We lose the habit of reading because we’re afraid of wasting our time. We think we need to be preoccupied and productive at all times. But people are not machines, and you are nourished by naps and fiction and basking in sunlight, no less than by food and drink.

Many children enter school with a foundation in visual literacy, having been exposed to and engaged with film and animation from an early age. In educational settings, we can leverage this existing knowledge as a basis for further literacy development. 1/3
