Does anyone working in critical care use any form of a post-extubation dysphagia protocol and wouldn't mind sharing their experience?

First week done in my ICU rotation ✔️ Learning a lot already 🤯 Any tips/resources for vent/trache learning/competencies, send them my way.... 👍🏼

Check out this fantastic band 6 rotational SLT post. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated SLT to join our clinically passionate, friendly team at The Royal Surrey NHSFT. Closing date 6th December. beta.jobs.nhs.uk/candidate/joba…

Many forms of impairment are "hidden" and cognitive impairment after Covid-19 and critical illness can be too. People often "look" normal but they are not and, as a result, they suffer in silence, not receiving the empathy they need. #LongCovid @CIBScenter

Can't believe how quickly this month has gone. First time being a Practice Educator over the last four weeks and very pleased to have passed my student for her final ever placement 🥳

The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped flap in the throat. During swallowing, it prevents entry to the larynx—closing the door, so to speak—to stop food, liquid, and saliva from entering the trachea (and lungs). This gif shows how it works [source, read more: buff.ly/38lrF9C]

I've now fully read these & feel strongly that it is one of the rare articles that can have such an immediate impact on SLT clinical practice. I really hope that this is the start of ensuring equitable and knowledgeable SLT services for people with functional symptoms.

Journal club topic today: Free Water Protocol 💦 👍🏼 for QOL, hydration & ⬆️ compliance w/ modified recs. However, is anyone using water only trials as a rehab technique? Eg. Maybe a NBM pt but wanting to preserve swallow func? Interested to hear, as this seems different to FWP!🥤

SLT role in complex COVID-19? Tracheostomy, Dysphagia assessment and therapy, AAC and much much more. Good article ⬇️.@DysphagiaCafe

New Article. Great resources for the acute care clinician. This is a first in a series of three articles. Please share! ow.ly/YS7U50EeLMK

So lovely to have an Assistant Chaplain ask for advice/support on how to help a patient communicate on ICU and then send me detailed feedback on how her visit went and how the patient was able to participate (including mouthing along to The Lord's Prayer) 🤗

Does anyone know if @RCSLT have any patient information resources (eg. factsheets/leaflets) available on COVID recovery/related symptoms relating to voice/swallow/communication/airway?

Rachel Phillips Reposted

Agreed. #LongCovid voice and swallowing clinics should be #SLT led with support from ENT. We should all work towards making endoscopy and FEES equipment available in all hospitals and supporting SLT colleagues to acquire endoscopy skills. This should be the norm!

Timely, as was just in a meeting with @philippaVoice that touched on this! We are aware - in the short term ENT and voice clinic referral is best route for support - building more #SLT input into #LongCOVID clinics would be ideal @KGadhok @BrollJudith @ClinicLvs @justinroe

Rewarding joint session today with tracheotomised pt on ICU, establishing and facilitating communication 💬✨
