It's time! My piece on the iron dog of Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery and the little girl it watches over has officially been published. This was an absolute delight to work on and I'm so happy with how it turned out. wric.com/history/floren… #RVA #Virginia
Like a lot of other people, I've been working on establishing myself on a certain butterfly-themed app. My handle over there is my first and last name, for those also migrating. 🦋
This is in reference to photos of Liam Payne, dead, being run by a certain organization. Journalists, don't let go of your humanity in the search for traction/notoriety. The stories you're telling are about real people. How would you feel in Payne's family's shoes?
we need to have so many conversations about journalism ethics for younger generations but starting with why not to run photos of someone who died
From a thread about local news in the wake of Helene. Local news is only as strong as the support it receives. The reason huge news organizations can create the content they do is b/c they have incredible amounts of funding. Passion can do a lot -- but it can only go so far.
Everyone is tweeting ‘there’s an emergency, read local news, read local news.’ Y’all, you have to FINANCIALLY SUPPORT local news. You have to donate. You have to subscribe. You have to do it even when you think the reporting is mediocre and they publish op-eds you don’t like.

The sunbeam was a paid actor. (This story is very close to being ready. I'm very excited to share everything I've learned about these two Hollywood Cemetery residents.)
Hint hint, a cool piece about Hollywood Cemetery coming soon. (I swear, if no one finds this dog as cool as I do, I might cry.)
Returning to something joyful: If you're a college journalist, I will read your resume/cover letter/whatever nonsense your internship apps are asking for. I'll do it for free! DM me!! I'd love to chat/connect you with my friends/whatever. Journalism is better when done together.
The fourth estate strikes again. Incredible job as usual, @DeanMirshahi

This has me wondering when LIS was last overhauled. Considering there's a "Classic" toggle, there's been at least two versions in the history of the Internet. Wonder what these new capabilities will be. (Please include an improved search function, I'm begging.)
you legally can't bully me for the next 30 days
This Labor Day, I want to take a moment to honor the Black women who fought for better working conditions. In 1938, they led citywide strikes for fair pay, an 8-hour workday, and collective bargaining rights. Photo credit: The Commonwealth Institute
I’m thinking of Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s parents tonight. Being in the room for their speech is a moment I’ll never forget. They spoke with such moral clarity while enduring unimaginable pain. May Hersh’s memory be a blessing, and may his family find peace.
I've known my husband for just under 13 years now (which is a crazy thing to type, yet true). We've been together for about 10 of those years and married the last few. Every day I wake up and every day I find myself more in love with him. So yeah, I think it's possible. ❤️🏳️🌈
do you believe you are capable of love even though you are a journalist
Breaking: In a letter obtained by 8News, @GovernorVA tells Virginia's congressional delegation that Virginia will not be participating in the new IRS Direct File Program. The program would allow taxpayers to file their taxes online for free directly on the IRS' website.
This is the only reasonable takeaway. An American family went to a political event and saw their loved one killed in front of them. Pray for that family and the country. Forget politics.
Lots of hot takes today Let us remember an innocent person died It was also a traumatic experience for those who were there It is a difficult time for the country Let us focus on healing wounds right now Political stuff will always be there
