Final reflection for today: the essence of professionalism is to know what you are doing, and to care about the effect of everything you do.
I am inundated with heartbreaking messages like this, which is why we desperately need a safe assisted dying law. It’s to protect the terminally ill whose pain and suffering can’t be controlled at the end. As the law currently stands, there are no protections in place for the 17…
Thank you your speaking out Sophie. Last year I had to watch powerlessly as a loved one suffered discomfort, pain and indignity with zero proper end of life care. I don’t want the same to happen to me if I’m struck down with a similar illness.
Haven't said anything about buying palliative care. It should be there on NHS for all. But even if this govt starts to fund it now, will take years for it to be available for everyone. Until then, people should have choice as to whether to suffer a longer, painful deaths, or not.
Amos Goldberg, Professor of Genocide Studies at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem "Yes, it is genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion. Jewish history will henceforth be stained" Is there anyone more qualified and unbiased?
#Statistics thought of the day: Simple example contrasting frequentist, likelihoodist, and Bayesian inference. Would you rather have Pr(getting MORE heads than what we observed if a coin is fair),or Pr(Pr(heads) is outside [0.48, 0.52])? hbiostat.org/bayes/bet/evid… #rstats
Come up with a more rational concept than "type 2 diabetes"?
Why have diabetes rates doubled over the past 30 years and what can be done about it? theguardian.com/society/2024/n… via @annabawden
Streeting utterly disingenuous in suggesting other treatments would need to be cut to pay for assisted dying theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
I never can resist a curving lane, disappearing into the mist, tantalising, beckoning. They're the reason I'm late for so many appointments. I've told my son that my dying words will be, "I just want to see what's around the next corner..." - as they always were in life. 😂
Important clarity from Leader of the House, Lucy Powell, on procedure around Kim’s Assisted Dying Bill. 🧵 - 5 hours of debate at 2nd reading, which is comparable or longer than most govt bills. - Committee for ‘several weeks’. - Votes at report stage and Third Reading.
Coercion is a complex subject because in any context it’s difficult to assess and properly unpack. But we should be clear that evidence suggests those who are dying are more likely to be pressured by family not to seek assistance.👇 heraldscotland.com/news/24701491.…
There is a wonderful unit called THIS in Cambridge run by @MaryDixonWoods specifically to look at deep solutions to improving hospitals as opposed to top-of-the-head bullshit like this.
So Wes Streeting’s plan to improve ailing hospitals is….to publicly shame them?! How about actually providing HELP to those hospitals most in need to improve patient care? Please bin this ridiculous hospital league table idea 🗑️
They're even worse on bicycles
Of course they do, they can't see over the fucking steering wheel. Accident waiting to happen. 📸: @STEcopywriting
When THREE former Directors of Public Prosecution are saying this with experience of FIFTEEN YEARS leading the CPS….we need to sit up & pay attention, the current law is NOT WORKING thetimes.com/article/0006d6…
The law at the moment provides no safeguards and *doesn’t* protect the vulnerable says most recent Director of Public Prosecutions, Max Hill. “Surely Parliament can do better than a law passed in 1961? They must look at the detail of @kimleadbeater PMB.”
If it can be proved that it's not genocide that would be a huge relief. It would mean that it's only a huge massacre, mass killing and widespread slaughter In which case it would be OK.
Hospital league tables are a disastrous idea. You do not improve standards by shaming hard-working NHS staff, damaging morale and adding unnecessary stress. We should support - not scapegoat - our medics. That means giving them the resources they need to provide care for all.
"With iterative intelligence, knowledge ceases to be a rigid structure to be mastered and becomes a dynamic web—one that expands and morphs with every inquiry and insight. The learner no longer needs to adapt to the rigidity of information; instead, information molds itself to…
#CochraneDaily How ever will we keep up? PubMed contains 2884 records with meta-analysis in the title that were published in October 2024: 93 per day. Compare that with 12 per day in 2007 jameslindlibrary.org/bastian-h-glas… #EvidenceSynthesis #EBHC #EBM
Autumn evenings are perfect for that combination of low, bright sunshine and stormy skies. I stood, transfixed, as the light show swept across these glowing hills, picking out each field and tree in turn, until it reached this magnificent Ash. He just shone in the spotlight.
Choice is all we ask for.The bill gives the opportunity for a dying person to speak with loved ones openly & legally about ending a life a little bit early. If it had existed my husband who had every care could have been released from the last unbearable weeks & chosen his time.
Many people have experienced the devastating effects of banning assisted dying: witnessing prolonged, traumatic deaths despite the best care, or terminally ill relatives taking matters into their own hands. This is inarguable evidence that the status quo is not working.
