Outrage over the hiring of neoliberal economist and police apologist Jennifer Doleac to run criminal justice policy at Arnold Ventures is growing. My letter is in the thread.

After what seemed like forever, here is my first solo publication! I examined the motivations for persistent gang involvement among Hmong gang members and reflected on salient cultural and geographic distinctions. 👇👇👇 tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

#EndLWOP Great stories & great reporting! No dehumanizing language. Instead real discussions about trauma, healing, transformation, responsibility, & the power of education. Understanding the true causes of crime is how we end #massincarceration #reentry youtu.be/G9h7Lj78RTQ

If you are outraged that Elizabeth Holmes has a small child and is pregnant and is going to jail, ask yourself: Who do you think populates women’s prisons?

Esther Matthews (she/her) Reposted

$556,539 per year That’s how much $$$ it costs NYC, per person, to jail someone on Rikers Island in deadly, inhumane conditions, We live in a society that will spend to more money to jail someone than to house, educate, & feed them combined. The cruelty is the point.

I may be a walking red flag, but you cannot deny the quality of the fabric. 🚩

Quote from my unwell husband in prison following a bad episode with his Parkinson's, "I feel lucky to be surrounded by so many beautiful, kind, broken men who, despite all their failings, show such care and gentleness."

Same foundations that call themselves progressive will ask non profit organizations to measure success through recidivism rates, as if Black, brown and poor people getting locked up is not primarily a function of government policy: parole, policing, probation, child support, etc.

Incarceration didn't fail you. It was never meant to protect you.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a student activity on reasonable suspicion, just cause, etc.? I'm trying to get my students to put themselves in the decision-making role. #AcademicTwitter #teaching #studentlearning #policingactivity

Check out @JGarciaForrest and my new article showing that racial messaging to Black voters from white Democratic candidates increases perceptions of empathy and in turn mobilizes African Americans.

📣🗳️ As the US #midterm election season gets closer and closer, consider this recent work from @JGarciaForrest and @christophestout on racial messaging and political participation, interest, & mobilization. Read more here: tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

We need to find a way of honouring the dreadful experiences of some victims of crime that is not just imposing weighty punishment on those who have wronged them. Victims need more than such punishment and usually this doesn't help them at all.

Yesterday Adnan left me the first voice notes he's ever left anyone and they are as adorable as you'd expect ("is this on, is this recording, what is this?") and told me he's trying to learn to use an iPhone but that "he's not really liked cell phones since 1998", I DIED 🤣🤣🤣
