On 4th November 1940, death of Arthur Rostron from pneumonia. On the night of 14-15 April 1912, as captain of the Carpathia, he responded to distress calls from #Titanic. As the ship had already sunk, only the survivors in the lifeboats could be saved. 1/2

‘Ladies day at the old Green’. Some fine hats on show in the summer of 1912. Bowls is still played at Southampton’s Old Bowling Green. The earliest reference to bowls being played here was in 1299, when the green was part of the nearby God’s House Hospital, a refuge for pilgrims.

Family photos…

#TITANIC and her sister ship #OLYMPIC were iconically photographed being built side-by-side on the Harland & Wolff shipyard, the first time in history for two ships of such size. They were last photographed together on March 6, 1912, at the Thompson Graving Dock in Belfast.

As a matter of fact, I did wear blue…

#OnThisDay 160 years ago in 1864 Squadron Colours were abolished which had seen the @RoyalNavy ships sailing under the Red, White & Blue ensigns. From this day on, the RN mustered under the White Ensign. The Blue went to vessels commanded by @RNReserve & Red to Merchantmen.
