As promised a short 🧵 on our latest work just out in @SciImmunology! Spearheaded by talented PhD student Anne Onrust and Hi-C wizard @G_Stik 💪 What did we find? A central theme in my lab is understanding immunological memory in T lymphocytes. After a naive T cell has been 1/
🧬GWAS is fundamental in drug discovery, linking disease to genetic variants. However, studying rare and uncommon diseases with GWAS is hard due to the huge sample sizes required. How can we use AI to help GWAS with small cohorts? In a multi-year collaboration @GSK…
It's wonderful to see that spatial proteomics has been recognized as Nature Methods' Method of the Year 2024. nature.com/articles/s4159…
Trump says RFK Jr will “investigate” the link between vaccines and autisms as “somebody needs to find out.” We’ve ALREADY FOUND OUT - >600,000 kids in Denmark - >90,000 in the US - >1.2m kids worldwide NO LINK. How many more of these does he want us to do?
If the structural similarity between hemoglobin and chlorophyll doesn't fascinate you, then I'm not sure we can be friends.
5 big medical advances from November (🧵) 1. Diabetes prevention In obese adults, Tirzepatide (a GLP1/GIP receptor agonist) was >90% effective to prevent type 2 diabetes Analysing only those fully compliant to 15 mg Tirzepatide, its efficacy was 100% nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
New preprint from the lab where we show how dysregulated transcription elongation causes neurodevelopmental defects. Immensely proud of Hedda Somsen and the entire team! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Biggest medical discoveries of the week (🧵) 1/8 A twice-yearly prophylactic injection - Lenacapavir - is >95% effective to prevent HIV (in men - it's already proven in women!) It's even more effective than daily pills (F/TDF), due to better adherence nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
Congratulations and welcome to our new Young Investigators!
27 life scientists have been selected as the newest members of the EMBO Young Investigator Programme. Congratulations and welcome! Read more: embo.org/press-releases…
For storage, I’m freeze drying most of my cells rather than storing in a -80c. Can have em at room temperature with full stability for decades. Way less energy use and I don’t need to worry about power turning off or freezers breaking
"Our results reveal that whenever handwriting movements are included as a learning strategy, more of the brain gets stimulated, resulting in the formation of more complex neural network connectivity...typewriting do[es] not activate...networks the same way that handwriting does."
The real work of science is generating a well-posed hypothesis that can be tested, not predicting the results of a study to test that hypothesis.
Sad news for all current graduate students out there. ChatGPT pretrained on scientific papers of the last two decades can now predict the results of your study. Oops. nature.com/articles/s4156…
📢 Preprint! Does the environment of a father before conception influence offspring? Even more, how do paternal genetics & age interact with exposures to affect F1 outcome? We tested this systematically, with intriguing findings & some cautionary tales biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
One of the reasons why it is so difficult to maintain weight loss is because adipose issue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss. nature.com/articles/s4158…
SOX and POU are crucial Transcription Factors in animal development, believed to be innovations. We found them in unicellular relatives of animals. And hold tight, you can use a choanoflagellate 🦠 SOX gene to make a full chimeric 🐁 ! Read more here: rdcu.be/d0dPN 1/6
First born children have higher IQ than their siblings. 🧵1/9
Most bone marrow compartments deteriorate during aging, but our study reveals that the skull bone marrow is a surprising exception. Very excited to share our work from @ralfhadams lab with some amazing collaborators! nature.com/articles/s4158… 🧵👇💀🔬🩸
If I asked you, "who is doing COOL things in the gene regulation/functional genomics space", who comes to mind?
convergence.nl/meet-the-team-… Flagship lead Alina Rwei and PhD student Maartje van Wijhe discuss how the TU Delft dept of chemical engineering and EUR dept of Applied Economics can work together to move knowledge on adverse effects of air pollution beyond long term trends.
Have a look at our new #preprint on @researchsquare: Early life RSV infection as a preventable risk factor for asthma researchsquare.com/article/rs-536… Contains epidemiology on entire Danish population, 24000 hospital admissions for RSV and causality experiments in mouse model
science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… T cells receive regulatory signals from close neighbours, through ligand-receptor interactions and cytokines. Therefore we dived into the local neighbourhoods of CD8 T cells to investigate why a lung cancer model was resistant to KRAS-G12C-i + a-PD1.
