A brief Advent liturgy for use with families. Each week I'll post a new one! russellvincentwarren.wordpress.com/2024/12/01/adv…

There is something weird happening with the verbs in Jude, at least in English translation (and the tenses seem to be pretty consistent across translations). I need to dig into aspect a bit more to see if I can make sense of what I'm seeing.

New Post: Mere Men? russellvincentwarren.wordpress.com/2024/11/14/mer… Prepping for Sunday School, I find myself distracted - once again - by interesting features of the Greek New Testament and how they are (mis)rendered in English translation.

New Post: Mortal Corruption russellvincentwarren.wordpress.com/2024/11/12/mor… In which I continue to find interesting things hidden (obscured?) by the ESV translation - possibly even my own ignorance of Greek grammar.

Wait...is the name "Athanasius" from ἀθανασία (deathless)? If so, that's hard core.

Feeling overwhelmed learning Hebrew or Greek? Don’t give up! I shed many tears in 1st yr Hebrew. 4 years later I’m reading Esther & deep diving into verbal semantics. Greek just wouldn’t stick. 2 years later I’m reading Tobit for fun. And I love it all. It’s worth the work.

Excellent advice for pastors (and everyone!) from @JoAnnaMHoyt on how to think about words and their meanings and responsibly engage with Hebrew (and Greek) lexica.

If Hebrew is important enough to wield in sermons, then it's important to wield it responsibly. (...Greek too!) I wrote an article for @Logos on one of my passions: lexical meanings & responsibly wielding sources according to one's skill level. logos.com/grow/min-commo…

Prepping for Sunday School can lead to delightful insights. Concerning the human will of Christ and how that informs our discipleship, this is where I ended up: Grace corrects our corrupt nature and then proceeds to glorify it.

Crowd sourcing help needed! Contranyms are words that have senses that are opposite or nearly opposite of each other. E.g.: λύω 'set free' vs. 'destroy' ἀφίημι 'forgive' vs. 'divorce' Can anyone think of some others?

At long last, a much-needed Bible verse selector has been added to our website. For now, only links to the four Gospels are available, as the critical apparatus for other books remains empty. Check it out!

More than a lesson for just chess coaches, but for all of us! Look at the causes, not just symptoms, and *think*, test and *think again*

I am working with two very young children, both very talented in chess but with poor discipline, lack of patience, and poor concentration to sit in front of a chess board for more than a few minutes. They get impatient, the mind gets distracted very quickly. Have been trying…

Getting ready to do a deep dive into Calvinism. I hope I got the right edition.

This would be a good addition to my work on "how we got the Bible" - maybe I'll be the lucky one.

Scribes & Scripture w/@pjgurry was published two years ago to the day. To celebrate, I'm giving away a copy! Simply RT this post to enter, and I'll announce the winner on Thursday morning! Or you can order here (still 30% off): amzn.to/3Yw0AtT
