The inconsistent use of driving bans & the reluctance of the judiciary to use lifetime bans was put into sharp and tragic focus after Aidan Webb was killed by a driver convicted of death by careless driving whilst over the legal limit of alcohol (the use of ‘careless’ in…

I have migrated to Bluesky; come join me there! @profkyd.bsky.social

Deeply concerned to log on this morning to find I've apparently followed a porn account. An account followed by 50+ people I know, who I suspect did not choose to do so either. I already found it a bit icky being on this site; I'm sorely tempted to delete my account.

Thank you to @pjalmond for bringing this to my attention. I'm rarely truly excited by reading an academic paper, but I ❤️ this! Plenty of food for thought. On initial reading, I might collapse the categories of Speed and Safety (as "roads to be taken" in criminology) into one.

RPAN members were out in force yesterday at the @TheRSTrust symposium. Great to see projects showcased, which have been funded by the trust, from several members, and also great to hear from our director @roadspolicing on generating impact from research.

In advance of a debate in the House of Lords on the 12th September about cyclists and the law, a briefing document has been published. lordslibrary.parliament.uk/cyclists-and-t…

This applies to all drivers, not just professional drivers. A useful resource to start changing minds about the use of hands-free phones behind the wheel.

A video resource, grounded in behavioural change theory, has been developed to help reduce the use of hands-free phones by professional drivers, by debunking the myth that it is safer than using a hand-held device. roadsafetytrust.org.uk/news/video-rel…

I'm a little perplexed by @NextbaseUK 's use of social media. On here (X) they claim to be about #roadsafety. On Facebook I see them trying to stir up anti-cyclist feelings and attributing near misses to cars/vans (not drivers). Disappointed.

The recommendations Paul and I discuss in our article in the Criminal Law Review [2023] 4-25 have largely now become law in the Automated Vehicles Act 2024. We summarise some of the discussion from the article in this interview with @FacultiNet

In January 2022, the Law Commission on Automated Vehicles published a report on the regulation and safe deployment of automated vehicles. Paul Almond @pjalmond and Sally Kyd @ProfKyd @uniofleicester @LawLeicester review elements of the proposed regulations and discuss the role of…

I'm late to this element of the proposal. Completely undermines the message being sent to drivers regarding penalty points (PP). PP should not be a general "stick" to make people compliant with rules. PP *should* be about limiting risk on the roads. inews.co.uk/news/politics/…
