It’s hard to believe (because very likely you’ve self-selected into reading this tweet), but very few product people — easily less than 10% — genuinely want to learn their craft & get better at it. And speaking from >20 yrs of my personal experience, therein lies your advantage.


It looks like the reporter knew about the iPhone well ahead of time (maybe some insider news source) and Steve Jobs is caught off-guard here, yet he handles it smoothly.

While undoubtedly uncomfortable for some, this is the correct take, if you want to increase your odds of making highly successful products. Sometimes, this also means that someone other than the operator-type PM should be primary on what gets built.

Taste and craft are under appreciated in product management. While great ideas can come from anywhere I believe just a few people should be tasked with aiming, and everyone should know who those people are in the org/company.
