@IEAAustralia⁩ VP Prof Ren Yi kicking off #AIEC2024 pre-conference workshop and asking key questions:- “Why is international education important to Australia”? With only .04% of world’s population we produce 4% of the new global knowledge each year! Thanks to o/s students

Together at #EAIE2024 in Toulouse this week with CEOs and Presidents from the Network of International Education Associations (NIEA). Great discussions about issues between the Global North and South. Really important that we meet together to share policy issues and concerns!

Thanks to the hundreds that joined our Member Update this morning on the National Planning Levels. IEAA CEO Phil Honeywood and Board Member Jonathan Chew fielded scores of questions about how the levels are going to be administered. We'll share the video with members shortly.

Very disappointing and factually wrong comments by @paulsakkal on @InsidersABC that “foreign students don’t speak English”. Clearly we need to educate our journalists that Australia’s English entry level standards into our unis are some of the highest in the world! @uniaus

Minister ⁦@JasonClareMP⁩ highlights #AFRLive that international student caps will be announced later this week. Explained that Ministerial Direction 107 must be abolished. His emphasis on enrolments being too high overlooks that many students have more than one enrolment.

Great to catchup in Canberra with 3 good friends and international student advocates ⁦@LukeSheehyUA⁩ ⁦@ThomsonVicki⁩ and ⁦@Navitas⁩ Simon Finn. Big day tomorrow in Senate Education Committee’s hearings on university caps - hoping for key changes ⁦⁦!

Congrats to @JulianHillMP on becoming Asst Minister for Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs to new Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke. As Co-Chair of the Parliament Friends of International Education Group, we look forward to Julian’s expert knowledge of our sector supporting Tony!

With #Inted 400 attendees at #PIELIVE24 on Gold Coast. Great panel “Is Innovation Truly Possible in Education?” comparing Australian unis community building partnerships in India, Malaysia, Indonesia through digital learning and offshore campuses Achieving a globalized workforce!

Good start ⁦@IEAAustralia⁩ annual Transnational Ed Network Forum. Panel discussing Australia’s Draft International Ed & Skills Strategic Framework. Speakers ⁦@CharlesSturtUni⁩ Mike Ferguson, ⁦@TracyHarris8⁩ Tim Gilbert from ⁦@melbpoly⁩ , HA James Goodsell

@IEAAustralia Pathways Forum Student Panel’s great advice included: Be open to change and get comfortable being independent. “Too many students are only comfortable within their same culture bubble.” “Super friendly and supportive teachers are often available but you need to ask”

Great student voice panel today ⁦@IEAAustralia⁩ annual Pathway Network Forum in Sydney. Students studying incredible variety of courses such as fashion design, ethical hacking, cyber security. Culture shock having to write essays instead of just sitting exams plus oral exam

I can’t believe that, coming on top of the recent policy impacts on our sector, the Govt have today decided to increase non-refundable student visa fees from AUD $710 to $1600! This will make Australia more than double the cost of other countries. This is exploiting young people!

Great to meet the Founder/CEO of Duolingo, ⁦@LuisvonAhn⁩ on sidelines ⁦@NAFSA⁩ 2024. Inspiring life story a leader of democratising education and language learning: “bringing in smart people from other nations is a good thing”. Big philanthropist ⁦⁦⁦as well.

We have been waiting for the Coalition to show their support for the international education sector. Now we know they are an anti o/s student alternative govt. Do they know that they will destroy 100s of Lib voting quality ed providers and cut 1000s of jobs @uniaus @IEAAustralia

Concerns in meeting today @JasonClareMP @ClareONeilMP that hard caps on o/s students coming to Aus. Happily, consultation then implementation in Jan, 2025. Skills in Demand, Regional delivery, on campus housing all incentives for negotiated caps. No increase in visa fees for now!

The notion that unis will conjure up 1,000s of new accomm beds for overseas students is seriously flawed. Housing is a State and Local Council responsibility. Randwick Council in Sydney just refused a 1,000 bed facility. o/s students are 4% of rental market @IEAAustralia @uniaus

What better thing to do from 1 to 2am this morning but be a panellist ⁦@UniversitiesUK⁩ international ed conference! Joined in discussion by ⁦@univcan⁩ COO and eminent UK colleagues. We are all facing challenging policies plus looming elections ⁦@IEAAustralia
