As much as this fascinating analysis is a damning indictment of the American system, the other side of the coin is a rallying cry to safeguard for socialised healthcare. The English outcomes are better and more equitable because of a free-at-point-of-use NHS. We must protect it!

NEW: I’m not sure people fully appreciate how dire the US life expectancy / mortality situation has got. My column: enterprise-sharing.ft.com/redeem/75e5e3d… And some utterly damning charts. 1) at *every* point on the income distribution, Americans live shorter lives than the English.

In 2018, "Parachute use to prevent death and major trauma when jumping from aircraft: randomized controlled trial" was published in the British Medical Journal. It sought to determine if wearing a parachute when jumping from a plane had any impact on survivability. It did not.

Immensely damaging to efforts for good antibiotic stewardship, and vastly increases the likelihood of antimicrobial resistance. Sincerely hope good sense eventually prevails and this proposal is abandoned.

This is staggeringly irresponsible of @theresecoffey & will cause so much more harm than good. Doctors do not - unlike Coffey - dish out spare antibiotics to our family & friends because we’re painfully aware of the harms of antibiotic resistance. Utter recklessness.
