Very excited to share 3D Live-Seq. Integrated live-cell imaging and single-cell DNAseq of the same tumor #organoids. We reconstruct evolving tumor genomes over multiple consecutive cell divisions to map the tempo and patterns of karyotype diversification go.nature.com/2UfgAls

🚨New paper alert!🚨 Congrats @ConnorTKeating @dagmarfraser @Sophie_Sowden @Jennifer_L_Cook !

Exciting news! Our paper "Differences Between Autistic and Non-Autistic Adults in the Recognition of Anger from Facial Motion Remain after Controlling for Alexithymia" is now available #OpenAccess in JADD @Jennifer_L_Cook @Sophie_Sowden @dagmarfraser doi.org/10.1007/s10803… 🧵1/8

If a mismatch in the production of facial expressions explains the differences in emotion recognition in our study, we would expect to see larger differences between the groups in their productions of anger, than happiness or sadness. Watch this space for more info on that! 🧵8/8

Paige White Reposted

If this is true, it's not accurate to talk about autistic people having a 'deficit' recognising emotion. It's just that autistic and non-autistic faces are speaking a different language when conveying emotion. You can read about this in our previous paper doi.org/10.1016/j.chc.…

Paige White Reposted

Since autistic and non-autistic people produce different facial expressions and one's own movement patterns affect the interpretation of movement of others, the autistic participants may have struggled to recognise these angry expressions as they are dissimilar to their own🧵6/8

It's important to highlight that the point light displays used in this experiment were created by filming non-autistic actors. So let me share our working hypothesis with you... 🧵5/8

In contrast, alexithymic traits were predictive of the magnitude of both correct and incorrect emotion ratings across all emotions and levels of the spatial and speed manipulation. 🧵4/8

Paige White Reposted

We found that autistic participants had lower accuracy for angry, but not happy or sad, facial motion with 'normal' speed and spatial exaggeration. Importantly, autistic traits were predictive of higher incorrect emotion ratings for angry facial motion at this normal level 🧵3/8

Paige White Reposted

In our study, autistic and non-autistic adults matched on age, gender, non-verbal reasoning and alexithymia completed an emotion recognition task. In this task, participants viewed point light displays of angry, happy and sad faces with varying spatial movement and speed. 🧵2/8

This all brings me back to my earlier post. Life is short - enjoy your good days. Hug your family. Don't waste time on things that don't interest you. Love each other. Forgive each other. Find balance in your life and maintain it.

I am becoming increasingly convinced that the best part of a PhD is the summer before you start it, when you get to tell everyone you’re doing a PhD and they’re all like “oh that’s so cool” but you don’t have to actually do any of the PhD yet.

It’s time to introduce another member of B-PART! Meet @ConnorTKeating, an MRC-funded PhD student working in the Cook Lab (supervised by @Jennifer_L_Cook and Caroline Richards @RichardsLabUoB ). Connor is interested in the use and perception of facial expressions in ASD.
