Two far-right extremists drove a van up a sidewalk in Oslo, deliberately targeting pedestrians. Not dissimilar to tactics we have seen jihadist terrorists use in the past, and not the first time the hard right has mimicked their strategy. telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/2…
Exactly 2 years ago today, the Islamic State group lost the city of Raqqa - the de facto capital of its so-called caliphate. @Minalami gives a super helpful overview of what they've been up to since, right up to their alleged audacious prison break today. monitoring.bbc.co.uk/product/c2015z…
What a freaking killer way to kick off a writing day! My article “Cows, Charcoal, and Cocaine: al-Shabaab’s Criminal Activites in the Horn of Africa” is out today! This is probably my favorite piece to date. Check it out here: tandfonline.com/eprint/Y8A7KJZ…
Following on from this piece I did back in July. Today the UN's Q3 figures are out. US responsible for 74% of civilian casualties from airstrikes in #Afghanistan, killing or injuring at least 654 innocent people. Highest civilian casualty rate from airstrikes in a decade.
The US was responsible for 83% of all civilian casualties from airstrikes in #Afghanistan in the first 6 months of the year. This is nearly three times as many as 2018, which was almost twice as many as 2017... Me for @TBIJ: thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2019-0…
How the #Kurds helped the Allies to fight off the Nazis. @RichardJSpencer for @thetimes thetimes.co.uk/article/trump-…
Looked up terror deaths Europe 1970-1992 for a project. Distribution always interesting: UK: 3099 Spain: 958 Italy: 411 Greece: 244 France: 208 Germany: 99 Ireland: 97 Switzerland: 58 Belgium: 32 Portugal: 30 Netherlands: 26 Austria: 21 Sweden: 11 Denmark: 2 Norway: 1 Finland: 0
The last 3 presidents have helped revive the jihadi movement due to sheer stupidity. Bush: Iraq war invasion, Obama: withdrawing from Iraq without any safeguards, and Trump: betraying the SDF who helped take IS’s territory back.
Interesting. Very similar narratives were aimed at Muslim mothers to watch their sons, over the past 10+ years of counterterrorism. A comparative paper on the call to parenthood as a basis of ‘CVE’ would be worthwhile.
Parents need to understand how white supremacists prey on teen boys, so they can intervene. nytimes.com/2019/10/12/opi… via @NYTOpinion
When is the use of the phrase #ConcentrationCamps legitimate? Was @AOC right to compare them to US migrant detention centers? Was the @HolocaustMuseum right to criticise her? @RHULHistory's Dan Stone on these Qs & more for the @HistoryWO podcast @RHUL_HRI historyworkshop.org.uk/concentration-…
The #Kurds DID fight on the Allied side in WW2. They helped break the siege following the 1941 pro-Nazi Coup d'état in Iraq & were part of the (pro-Allied) Iraq Levies. By 1942 Kurds made up 25% of the force. By 1943, 10 of the 44 companies comprising the Iraq Levies were Kurdish
Trump on the Kurds: "They didn't help us in the Second World War, they didn't help us with Normandy." He says they're only interested in fighting for "their land." He adds, "With all of that being said, we like the Kurds."

White nationalist terrorism is not just a problem here - it's global. Finally after years of inaction we are able to have oversight hearings on domestic terrorism. washingtonpost.com/politics/white…
Exceptional thread from @noemie_bouhana on the complexity of establishing a linkage between terrorism & poverty. Much of the work on this is woefully simplistic so I particularly appreciate the nuanced approach here.
Reflecting on the extent to which poverty may contribute to VE provides a really good illustration of the challenge posed by investigating (or weighing claims about) the role of multilevel determinants in VE - something many of my students have a tough time with initially. 1/
