It constantly baffles me how people who are smart, curious and observant can be so blind to simple realities of their profession (and this is not a US thing - indeed it’s worse in most other places). You can not like it - I certainly don’t - but how is any of this a surprise?
I was reading 2023 Nobel laureate Katalin Kariko's book, Breaking Through. She was brutally honest about the academic system in US. And, here is an example section from her book.

The situation at UM-DAE CEBS regarding drinking water and other basic amenities isn't much better.
Students at IISERM staged a protest against the admin after repeated instances regarding the compromise of the safety of drinking water on campus was reported. It's pitiable to see that admin in Indian institutes are willing to listen only when pressurised. (1/2)
