For those few minutes while the blood film is staining, then subsequently as you sit to look at it under the microscope, you are the only person in the world who knows the diagnosis. And each time is 'heartbreaking' as @christiplady describes it. They are our patients too.

To you these cells may look like purple and red blobs. To me, a Lab Tech they represent a patient with an acute leukemia. For a few moments while I'm reading a blood smear like this, I may be the only person in the world who knows this diagnosis. We are more than button pushers !
