In case you were at the beach last night & thought it was close encounters of the third kind 👽👾 Don’t panic it was @RNLI lifeboats from Rock & Padstow & Polzeath CRT (on the cliff right) searching for a reported distress sighting Thankfully no casualties & a good intent call

This is the Man Down Cornwall campaign video for 2024. It’s a thought-provoking watch, but that’s exactly what we want it to be. Far too many men suffer in silence and are not able to talk openly about how they feel about themselves, their lives and the world around them. The…

As @DaveThroup says thankfully occurring on neap tides & not at the peak of spring cycle. Also those circles on the graph are times of high tide so skew surge between the tides & not coinciding BUT coastal erosion risk remains. Hopeful the wind remains offshore for the East coast

Forecast models now suggesting an impressive 2m north sea surge for east coast of England. Very fortunate tides are small and peak surge not aligning with high tide times.

Great photo! Just finished an Ops call with the Met Office and took a not so good photo out of the office window and fascinating to hear how those bandings have formed in the clouds.

Our 8 meteorological stations captured the rapid deepening of Storm Ciarán and its associated wind speeds across the South West today. *Note that these are real-time data and not quality controlled* 🌀💨 #Stormciaran #explosivecyclogenesis

Big waves 🌊 up to 10m high coinciding with high tide at Porthleven, Cornwall @OfficialSWCM wave buoys & met stations earning their money today. Great advice not to go and look from @PorthlevenFish watch the storm remotely by internet #StormCiaran

Large waves 🌊 now being recorded at the deeper water wave buoys off the Isles of Scilly and in the English Channel #Stormciaran

Storm damage, flooding, coastal erosion and now ruining your cup of tea also. 🫖 ☕️ #StormCiaran This needs to be factored into the economic impacts of climate change.

For those who partake, this may be considered to have a slight negative impact on the quality of your breakfast tea brew, as water will boil at ~98.3°C (shipcopumps.com/tools/mathwiza…), which is sub-optimal for the steeping process. I wonder how many will actually notice a difference?

Good comparison of wave heights, period, resulting surf and energy arriving at the coast as forecast for #StormCiaran compared to the infamous Storm Hercules back in 2014 from the team at @surflin, 🌊🌊 surfline.com/surf-news/inco…

Before the imminent arrival of #StormCiarán just pondering how lucky we are that this deep low pressure storm surge didnt coincide with high spring tides at the beginning of this week 🌊 Although it looks like St Helier may see an additional 1m on top of the high tide overnight

Have a look at this great start to finish 🧵 of how bathing waters get rated by the “boss” himself including getting his feet wet! 🦶💦🌊 Great to see the whole #teamEA from the samplers at the beaches🏝️🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️ to the laboratory team🧪🥼 Vital water quality work #respectthewater

1/ So how do we take bathing water samples and analyse their quality? Well what better way to find out than to do it myself. A thread 🧵 from beach to lab….. #geographyteacher #Chemistry
