Methods note: the point of qual research isn’t representation of a population, it’s demonstration of an issue. That entails a sample that tells you something about that issue — which you then transparently describe. Because some folks on here are loud & wrong.
I’m going to always side eye white scholars who study Black folks and our distrust of the police. As opposed to why the police, a remnant of slavery, and their deadly attitudes toward Black people. The first keeps us under white observation. The second demands accountability.
All I'm gonna say about the current Quant v Qual Crom discourse is that there is a very specific weird and problematic mentality of many. non-black quant researchers who study black people. They want to "study us" to get their accolades but would rather not engage with us
Of course a white person wrote this tweet about Black youth articulating how they feel. 1. The disclosure is in the paragraph. 2. I would argue this isn’t selection bias because it’s about their experiences w/ police, not solely whether they know abt or support abolition.
(1/2) We need more attention to selection bias in qualitative research. A new study in a top sociology journal examines "how young people experience policing," but it draws only on interviews of youth in an organization devoted to abolishing the police, one that bombards...
I know this is significantly less important than the beautiful communal defense of the @its_Serrano’s important work, we got you fam. However, I know this man ain’t Hufflepuff… 🦡.
