This week I’ve listened to the Leading English Language and Literature podcast which is hosted by @chrisjordanhk - I’ve really enjoyed the episodes with @MrZachG (on direct instruction), and @s_donarski (on assessment). Highly recommended! …adinglanguageandliteraturepodcast.com
I firmly believe that POSITIVE ACTION beats the blues every time. So, because I know what EduTwitter can be, I’m going to put that out into the universe and hope it lifts some of you, too. Here are some ENGLISH TEACHER things (in no particular order) which I think are ace… 👇🧵
Okay, she's finished! Since teaching the essay as a piece of writing rather than as unconnected 'paragraphs', our results have been pretty great. Our SEN pupils outperformed our non-SEN pupils for the first time ever this year. However...(A thread) drive.google.com/drive/folders/…
Here's a ppt with 27 short audiobooks (15 mins-1.5 hours) available on YouTube (my focus is Y9 but some for younger students too). Thank you to many on edu-Twitter who helped collate this! Let me know if you have more ideas, especially with diverse voices. bit.ly/3NIgETd

Hey #TeamEnglish 👋 I haven’t shared anything in a while so here’s what I’ve been working on recently. We have been focussing on teaching @DavidDidau’s Creative Sentence Types so I have made a display for our KS3 students focussing on the ones we have looked at so far:
Teaching the #PowerAndConflict poetry cluster? #aqa tes.com/resource-detai… *Planning sheets *Scaffolded #ExamPractice *Scaffolded PEEZL *Self Assessment linked to AQA AOs *Information sheets *Quotation analysis *Writing guides for a comparison *Flashcards #TeamEnglish

*Macbeth* - Sentence stems to help students upgrade their sentences and writing skills. Divided them into characters and themes. Will be useful prompts to help students struggling at higher also. Inspired by @sarfern webinar last year💫 #LCEnglish
I don't think people understand how powerful these writing tricks are. Pick any 3 tricks to kickstart your writing from the list: "X argues that..." → Introduce ideas "In other words..." → Clarify concepts "X is right that... However..." → Build on others' work Useful stuff

Tomorrow marks the start of a new series on my YouTube channel: 'Understanding Poetry.' This series aims to explore key elements of poetry and analyse examples from the 'Power and Conflict' cluster, whilst teaching you skills that you can apply to unseen poetry too.

Does anyone know what AQA @AQA similar centres classification is? What makes centres similar?
Riddle me this…. There was a 6.5% pay rise in 2023 under the tories. This year there will be a 5.5% pay rise under labour. Both pay rises came from independent review board recommendations. How does the lower amount become a ‘huge Trade Union payout’?
Today’s speech is Labour’s latest desperate attempt to dodge the blame for breaking their promises not to raise taxes. If you prioritise huge Trade Union payouts you run out of other people’s money. We will hold Labour accountable for its political choices & their consequences.
Time for my annual tweet to remind fellow English teachers that I have a host of fully resourced KS4 schemes available for free on missjohnston.com, and loads for KS3 available on request. If I can save anyone any precious remaining summer hol time, I would be very happy!
