This is wild to me. The first thing I always say to a new group is: if I mispronounce your name, please correct me. Why would you, as a professional and a human, not take the time to learn how to say someone's name?! The disrespect is inconceivable.
I've had students who are absolutely gobsmacked at this and tell me stories about tutors and teachers who have NEVER tried to pronounce their name properly, have given them nicknames, or just not bothered addressing them at all. Even showing you're trying makes a difference.
Language is not just an abstract skill or resource, language is also about knowledge, culture, identity, and land.
