What do you say when the impossible dream you've worked on for 24 years comes true? Yesterday the plug was pulled from the bottom of Iron Gate Dam; I was there. I thought of everybody who pulled together; scientists, regulators, but especially indigenous activists. Celebration.

Fish runs are a good way to reconnect people, rivers and fish through kids. From asking if they could eat the #riverherrings, being weary of touching them, to the little girl that apologized to each fish, they were all excited to learn about their life cycle.

Another dam removal success story. In the four years since removal of Bloede Dam on the Patapsco River, the number of Americans Eels counted at the fish ladder upriver jumped from 53 to over 37k. bayjournal.com/news/fisheries…

The mighty and elusive ‘ferox’ trout making Atlantic salmon look very small at spawning time. These monster brown trout spend most of their lives chasing Arctic charr in the depths of deep glacial lochs. They move into small burns to spawn, something that is rarely seen 🙂

It's always time to talk about eels! Thank you @DrEmilyFinch

Ok folks. It’s time we talked about eels. I’m a geologist but I recently learnt about eels and… wow. Since then, I’ve been greeting strangers with ‘DO YOU KNOW ABOUT EELS?!’ Well, consider yourself a stranger in my path. Strap in. It’s a 🧵 1/so many

Great grant opportunity for restoring and/or improving access for #anadromous (sea-run) fish!

.@USDOT @SecretaryPete Buttigieg will announce today that FHWA has opened applications for $1 billion grant program to protect critical fish populations and support local jobs by removing and upgrading culverts. bit.ly/3Me03oP #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw

#Eels have piqued the curiosity of scientists for millenia. The #Sargasso is thought to be where they spawn but eels had never been tracked there. Until now. For the first time ever, we followed eels to their spawning grounds #europeaneel #anguilla 🐟 nature.com/articles/s4159…
