How much SARS-CoV-2 viruses should be sequenced? More is not necessarily the best approach given the cost. The question you want to answer should drive the number of sequence needed.

Just to clarify some confusion about what 'Omicron' is. 'Omicron' has always applied to the whole family (BA.1-3 - we've known about them all since late-Nov/early-Dec). But the prevalence of BA.1 meant that it got shorthanded as 'Omicron' - that's causing some confusion now!🥴

As a non-virologist, here are some things I have learned about covid that I would not have guessed before the pandemic. They are super counter-intuitive:

I’m highly certain we need this data, they also need the ability to test their population for public health reasons. Having had experience of the stress reagent shortage due to lack of infrastructure and supply brings. We can’t let this knowingly happen to anyone in these times.

Today, I spent a big part of my day talking to genomic and biotech companies as soon we will run out of reagents as airplanes are not flying to South Africa! It will be 'evil' if we can not answer the questions that the world needs about #Omicron due to the travel ban!
