Having trouble with an undersized /boot on an old Ubuntu box? Set compress to xz in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf and sudo update-initramfs -u -k all . Freed up 75MB for me. Boots and kernel updates will be a bit slower, but those aren't frequent, and I'm patient.
