New publication alert! I am thrilled to announce that my new paper has just been published, and is open-access! It presents the first survey of variation in much of the cichlid skeleton behind the head. doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.12…

Hey, my new cichlid study is “grand”! Thank you, BDJ!

🐟 The grand cichlid study: based on some 1700 specimens of nearly 400 cichlid species, here's a survey of their postcranial skeletal features doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.12… #osteology #ichthyology #fishes @MichaelKOliver

Wait, @ShopRiteStores, let me get this straight. The unit price of an avocado is $1.50. You’re pricing them at two for $3. And this somehow will save me $1.50? Please explain.

We celebrate #BiodiversityDay by announcing the 5th #CETAF E-SCoRe Award winner: kudos to Nathan Vranken! His research on the Cichlids of Lake Edward earned him the prize of €1,000 + €1,500 for financial support to further study at one of CETAF's member institutes. #taxonomy

Malawi and Mozambique have many isolated mountaintops with unique endemic animal and plant species. A new ecoregion is being proposed, to improve chances of preserving what’s left. news.mongabay.com/2024/03/new-ec…

It’s a great Greek yogurt, but I wonder…. Would it be okay to yell FA-YEH! In a crowded theater?

Who could have guessed that a #secretary in Zomba (#Malawi) would be asked to move back home near #MonkeyBay, become senior chief, and begin a steeply uphill battle to eradicate #childmarriage & promote girls’ & women’s education? And she is succeeding! shinemycrown.com/meet-the-inspi…

researchgate.net/publication/37… DOI: 10.3390/d15101053 Today a Perspective paper was published that I coauthored with my European friends and colleagues Ivan Löbl, Bernhard Klausnitzer, and Matthias Hartmann on the current situation of biodiversity science/taxonomy.

The captain of this grotesquely #overloaded boat was arrested when local police saw it on social media. Captain ran boat service on #LakeMalawi between #NkhataBay and #Likoma Island, a distance of 73 km (43.5 mi) over often rough open water. #Malawi malawi24.com/2023/09/23/cap…

#Malawi #Fisheries is waging a steeply uphill battle to discourage purchasing juvenile #Chambo #cichlids, which are widely (illegally) fished to sell as food. These species are heading toward extinction. #kasawala malawi24.com/2023/09/13/mal…

I’m probably the last to discover that the US Postal Service has issued these gorgeous commemorative stamps of “Endangered Species.” (At least a couple are really just endangered subspecies — San Francisco garter snake; Mexican gray wolf.) Including two US freshwater fishes!

Situational #irony: #Ichthyology is my main specialty (#cichlid #taxonomy in particular); #beetles, my other one. I’ve published papers on both. By far my most-cited paper? My only foray into #botany, as a grad student (2nd author), reclassifying carnations and their relatives.
