Strange and spooky that I should come across this today, after watching the excellent @Lucy_Worsley investigates Witch Hunts in Scotland only last night... 🧹👻

Fascinating, and awful! + Thought you might be interested in this piece from 'Notes on Barra' written in 1845. I believe it describes the use of Merremia Discoidesperma nuts (aka Mary's, Crucifiction or Crucifix bean as an amulet. In Barratt they were called Arne Mhuire.

It’s bizarre. If you *rent* 5 acres of bog and rock you must by law live nearby. But if you *own* 10,000ha you can live anywhere you like in the world.

Crofters have a legal duty to live within 32 km of their croft, to cultivate and maintain it, and not to misuse or neglect it. Impossible for @CroftingScot to police this given current resources. Vigilance by landlords and other crofters also vital. obantimes.co.uk/2022/12/06/bre…

Throwback Thursday - Here The Battle of Leckmelm took place in 1585 between Clan Gunn and the Mackays of Aberach. Leader of the Gunn's was said to have swam across the water but died and was buried at Clachan Church, while the soldiers were buried where they fell.

A break in the storm over the Summer Isles.

Bombardier Peter MacKinnon born in Glendale 1828-1902. After military service he was the postmaster and opened a general merchant store. A strong voice in repudiating charges of lawlessness made against the crofters during the land uprisings. #ExploreYourArchive #EYABeards

We are privileged to have the community owned @islemartin close to Ullapool. It is a magical place with the ruins of the herring industry, streets, and ancient graves. There is a good sheltered bay with a pontoon, and you can rent cottages. Community groups make good use of it.

'Communists with bibles' I have seen various references to this. Sadly it was the opaque legal status of communally held land that often led to it's appropriation.
