Hi everyone! My name is Grace, and I've wanted to start this account for a while. I study the ecological physiology of marine invertebrates on the Washington coast, but, equally pertinent to this account, I am medicated for anxiety and depression.

Happy World Mental Health Day! Remember that putting in a good effort to balance your purpose, your own health, and your community's needs is going above and beyond! You are worthy of care whether or not you stay in this field, or whether or not you're doing ~amazing~! ❤️
Applications are open for BIMS Tidal Wave Program. Funded by NSF, this program aims to increase the participation of Black people in ocean sciences. Our first cohort is set to travel to the UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024 & will come to BIMS Week. Apps close 10/18 at midnight.
Something that we've been working for: Super grateful to @MarineBiol_FHL, @hypnopodia, and the UW Livewell Center for their work to make our first field station student mental health workshop happen! Now students know what wellness tools are available via UW should they need them
How do you think a university can keep their PhD students mentally healthy? #PhDVoice @PostdocVoice
This is exactly the message that MHIMS is trying to send! Thank you Chris for your courage and your vulnerability!
If someone lives in chronic, severe pain, it’s very likely their mental health will also be poor. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have a specific mental illness, and the best “therapy” may well be to find a better way to manage the pain. Physical health = Mental health
Important read here that applies to grad students and lab techs in marine science fields:
People rarely understand the indignity of being a poor student. Even with the best planning and care, when an emergency strikes you are unlikely to have the resources to cope, and many push it to the last minute before asking for help because of these complicated feelings.
Anonymous question “Can or should we go against the PI or advisors who are not just giving enough time and guidance you need. I am loosing all my deadlines just because Prof. is not giving time to discuss or not replying. If I meet him somehow he just finds some mistakes in…
Woo! The fabulous @SaffireSeahorse at work!
Every results day I’m reminded that deaf students achieve a full grade lower than their hearing peers. This doesn’t tell us that deaf students are less academically able, it tells us that they’re continually let down by an inaccessible education system.
Finding people inside, but especially outside the field is CRITICAL! Keep the perspectives in your circle as diverse as possible!
My best advice for new grad students: “Find your people” ✨ These can be folks in your program/department or completely unrelated to your field. But these are people who you can talk to, hang out with, commiserate with, and most importantly… #AcademicChatter #PhDChat
Important!
Please spread the word. We need your help! The governor and powerful pro development corporate interests are using the terrible lahaina fire to attack our water rights. We will not solve the climate crisis by returning to the status quo Aloha Aina! washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
Hi all, It is my pleasure to launch the HHMI Biointeractive and SEAS program's FREE course on 'Inclusive Teaching'. More than anything, this course asks us amidst the haste to slow down, pause and reflect on being human-centered in teaching . biointeractive.org/professional-l…
