Watch this space for further research to come for UK based sonographers #MedRadJClub
Who is going away from this chat ready to speak to their managers, leadership teams & professional bodies asking for support in developing professional supervision for themselves & team? #MedRadJClub
⌛️Last minutes of the live chat left! #MedRadJClub 🙏Thank you to everyone who joined us, it's been a great chat & #sonographer / #ultrasound takeover!🌟 Big thank you to the author of the paper & blog for this chat @GillianColema10 👏 Can't wait to see how the chat continues!
We also need to ensure that this is something in place regardless of where you are in your career - often support is given at the beginning and it just stops #MedRadJClub
.@SCoRMembers have been great at providing guidance previous! What other professional bodies internationally can #radiographers call upon for guidance?
More effective guidance from SCoR within the UK may help to drive this agenda forwards to integrate into practice. More research needed on best approach and needs of sonographers may be different to radiographers #MedRadJClub
🚨We are on our last discussion point this #MedRadJClub! Theme 4⃣ ❓How can we practically develop more supervision in the workplace for #sonographers? (& #radiographers)
Absolutely. The pressures of the workplace, the demands of working in that environment and with shortages of sonographers creates the perfect storm for emotional burnout leading to disengagement. Professional supervision can have the positive impact to support #MedRadJClub
Communication and teamwork has to be recognised and valued by employers - mentorship/supervision/learning are too often considered as a personal/out of hours thing - otherwise it can deteriorate into a workplace relations/healthcare and safety issue It’s cultural #MedRadJClub
We also need to better integrate supervision in PG education. Expecting students to have weekly supervisor meetings to discuss experiences and learning - but we need to train the supervisors away from being trainers into the whole educational ethos #MedRadJClub
How do we drive this to be more normal in #radiology?! #MedRadJClub
It’s just standard in other disciplines. Working with @pmillingtonpt around supervision in physios and they debrief with peer regularly. #medradjclub
Once I became a senior rad, really tried to have these kinds of debrief conversations with some more junior rads as can be a really hard process to navigate on your own! And also isolating which is never good for new staff :( #MedRadJClub
Without clear framework this can be challenging to enforce. There needs to be a challenge to the rhetoric of service needs and professional needs should be considered #MedRadJClub
I think you've hit the nail on the head here! How often do people physically see us in the patients pathway #MedRadJClub
Could it be that the solo/independent nature of the #Sonographer work life results in an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ outcome? Working alone in the dark under significant time pressures is not conducive to easy communication/relationship development #MedRadJClub
⚠️Next up!! Theme 3⃣ ❓What is stopping / inhibiting professional supervision? 🛑🚫⛔️ #MedRadJClub
I would say some depts may be very good at this, others not so much. Would be interested to know how regularly sonographers are engaged in these processes #MedRadJClub
How many #sonographers & #radiographers join MDT debriefs after incidents or significant events? #MedRadJClub
MDT debriefs, a safe place to discuss and learn from mistakes / share good practice #MedRadJClub
Agree there is crossover. Literature around professional supervision provides a clear distinction. If a clear process and framework in place then it can support more effective discussions and support for the professional that informal peer support may not provide #MedRadJClub
