NEW PAPER: Ever wondered why insects fly in all sorts of crazy patterns around lights at night? So did we! We set about recording flying insects to work out what's going on. I'll summarise what we found in this 🧵. Spoiler: We don't think they confuse lights with the moon.

Found these girls carving up a mushroom in the dead of night. I've not seen Atta using fungi to feed their crop fungus before, is this normal behaviour? @LivWalthaus @EvoBiomech @fabian_plum

A hugely important thread by @imperialcollege The recognition of racial violence and discrimination outside campus is essential to improve the lives of minority ethnic students. In order to fix our academic bubbles, we must address and challenge all forms of systemic racism. 👇🏾

While we celebrate the accomplishments of Black people during Black History Month, it's also important to acknowledge the lived experiences of Black communities. Systemic racism is a real and pervasive part of society. Take a moment to reflect with us ⬇️

Working for inclusion and diversity is an ungrateful job. Progress is slow, money is scarce, and hopes and dreams are often wrapped in admin tape. The people I advocate for, and the ones that stand by me in this fight, are the true inspiration and future of academia.

New open access paper out on the wonderful Gnat Ogre (Holcocephala fusca), with @FlySy_Lab, in @J_Exp_Biol . In it, you can find out how these tiny killers deal with physical obstacles on their way to hunt lunch on the wing. 1/6

Tonight northern newspapers have joined together to send a levelling up message to @michaelgove Babies born in many areas of the north in 2022 simply don't have the same life chances as those born elsewhere. It isn't fair. #TomorrowsPapersToday

It is now time to call upon UK institutions to widen their participation, scholarship programs and mentoring schemes to push on the ever stagnating figures of Black representation. Thanks @AlannahFrancis1 @theipaper for the feature. inews.co.uk/news/education…
