There's probably a reason NYC's public and private dyslexia-centered literacy academies don't use HMH etc. to teach their students how to read. It's not clear how NYC Reads reconciles that, considering there are dyslexic children in all our schools.

So the need for systematic phonics instruction is real. But it's also an issue with the new curriculums; HMH, Wit & Wisdom, and EL. That's probably why, despite the mandates, NYC schools are still using Fundations, Orton-Gillingham, Ready4Reading, and other PA/phonics programs.

SBISD *wants* community input on the new literacy adoption, so they drop a last-minute FB post Friday-oh, & the preview is next week! It’s just a major part of curriculum, right? No doubt it’ll also cost $$$, esp after they 🔥 through MILLIONS on Lucy recently. Not good enough.

Is your curriculum one of these? Hint: Wonders is wide-Ly used and is one of those we’ve seen being used to perpetuate the ineffective practices indicative of balanced literacy. DEEP EDUCATOR knowledge is essential!!

“The fact that these curric include basic skills instruction is apparently sufficient to get them on many of the approval lists. That doesn’t ensure that the material is used, let alone used effectively, because these same curricula support other approaches.” - @markseidenberg

Too many policies & decisions surrounding k-12 education are made to improve the optics of student achievement. It’s often just an illusion. Every single decision made & policy set by education leaders should lead to the actual improvement & enhancement of student learning.

The #2 biggest source of diminished credibility: the all-green reviews of bloated, more-mediocre-than-great basal reading series from big publishers, including Wonders & Into Reading. Helpful context: curriculummatters.org/2021/10/29/rev…

So, if there’s something we know to work better, like “all kids should work with grade level texts, so we should move away from leveled reading groups…” Wonders supports that! The grade leveled texts AND the leveled reading groups! #TeachYourWay eduvaites.org/2019/11/02/lev…

One of the critiques of basal reading programs is that they are designed to be a choose your own adventure program, thus any kind of instruction could be happening while using them. That’s not just what I say. It’s what their publishers tell us. mheducation.com/unitas/school/…

All the pages look like this. Big busy pages full of wasted space and nonsense (this kid is cute but more often it's giant cartoons of the story), with very little room for kids to write and abstracted main idea or "have the kid name the standard we tried to align with" type…

“Truly bad in so many ways.“

I would love to see more talk about Wonders. It’s on so many approved lists and yet it’s truly bad in so many ways. Into Reading is getting more attention because of the NYC adoption.

Do you use HMH reading curriculum? Thoughts?

Parents: if your school's ELA program is Wonders... red flags abound. You need to supplement. See the Reading League's curriculum review: thereadingleague.org/wp-content/upl…

Us to curriculum companies: KIDS NEED REAL BOOKS, NOT JUST TEXTBOOK PAGES AND LEVELED READERS Saavas/Into Reading/Wonders:

We are back. Time to fire up the old X account as we monitor what literacy curriculum SBISD is considering. The hard work parents have done should not be for nothing.
