My son Dylan was shot at least 5 times in his classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary. He died at just 6 years old. Yet in the years since, Congress hasn't taken action to save lives like Dylan’s. Sign our petition demanding Congress take action to prevent school shootings. -Nicole
Real-time U.S. gun violence numbers for the year, as of May 23rd: -5,373 gun deaths -10,254 gun injuries -227 children shot -1,005 teenagers shot -137 mass shootings -673 armed home invasions -522 defensive gun use incidents -566 unintentional shootings •~8,590 suicides*
45% of gun owners don’t lock up their guns. Prevent child access Reduce crime Prevent suicide LOCK 👏 UP 👏 YOUR 👏 GUNS 👏
Nobody needs an AR-15 to hunt. Nobody needs a semi-automatic rifle to defend their home. But mass shooters NEED these weapons in order to murder as many people as efficiently as possible. And so nobody will miss them when they are illegal - except for the killers.
HR8, which would expand background checks, passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and is on it’s way to the Senate. CALL YOUR SENATORS and urge them to support this bill to make our country safer. Rob Portman (513) 684-3265 Sherrod Brown (513) 684-1021
It was a powerful moment as I voted for the first major gun safety bill in decades & saw the House gallery filled w/ advocates who have fought for this moment for years. After Sandy Hook, Pulse, Las Vegas, daily gun violence, and especially after Parkland, finally we acted. #HR8
If we can reduce gun violence by raising the minimum age a person can buy a shotgun or rifle, then we should do exactly that. I am proud to introduce legislation that raises the minimum age to 21. We can save lives.
BREAKING: The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, or #HR8, just passed out of the House Judiciary Committee. This historic moment marks the first time in decades that major gun violence prevention legislation has passed out of the House Judiciary Committee.
Nobody wants to remove guns from law abiding citizens, we do want to make it harder for those who want to kill to get guns. Why? So that people you love do not end up as the latest gun violence victims. If this is lane you are choosing to sound like a Republican, you failed.
Most get wiser with age—the NRA seems to be an exception. 1999—“We think it’s reasonable to provide mandatory instant background checks for every sale at every gun show.” 2019—“...universal background checks will never be universal because criminals do not comply with the law."
Chairwoman @RepEBJ just introduced her new bill the "National Gun Violence Research Act." Access the bill text and the Chairwoman's statement below: science.house.gov/news/press-rel…
Watch the clip. Now watch it again and imagine someone in that room had a gun. Guns don’t belong in classrooms. .... and teachers don’t get paid nearly enough.
It’s been 4 days.
America has already reached 100+ gun deaths and 250+ gun injuries in the first four days of the new year.
We should not settle knowing these numbers are our reality. With this coming year, we will continue to advocate for the 14,000+ individuals who have lost their lives from guns and preventable gun violence
The 12 months of 2018: -56,693 total incidents -14,576 gun deaths -28,131 gun injuries -3,488 children & teenagers killed or injured -340 mass shootings -2,046 armed home invasions -1,765 incidents of defensive gun use -1,592 unintentional shootings
Instead of focusing on ways to make life better for Ohioans, the Ohio House voted to make our state less safe by overriding the veto of HB228 and voted to restrict women’s personal health care decisions by overriding the veto of HB258. I voted NO on both.
Data in perspective: 2014: 2,930 children & teenagers shot 2015: 3,394 children & teenagers shot 2016: 3,805 children & teenagers shot 2017: 3,979 children & teenagers shot 2018: 3,435 children & teenagers shot (in 360 days)
Happy birthday to @fred_guttenberg Sending you extra love and light today. 🧡
